New York Knicks: Why Tyson Chandler is New York's Most Irreplaceable Player
It's been one big roller-coaster ride in the Big Apple this season for the New York Knicks.
But with all the negative play, the Linsanity, the coaching drama and now all of the injuries, there has been one main constant in the Knicks lineup.
That's been Tyson Chandler.
Chandler's been the best free-agent signing in the NBA this year and has certainly already earned his keep in a Knicks uniform. Looking at Chandler's stat line for the season, you certainly wouldn't advocate paying $56 million for a guy that averages 11.2 PPG and 9.7 RPG.
Yet Chandler is one of those players who's value can't be measured on the stat sheet as his impact is felt in so many other ways.
Most importantly, he's the leader the Knicks have needed for so long. While Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are the Knicks' two best players, neither is really comfortable being a vocal leader in the locker room.
Chandler not only doesn't have a problem with that, but he leads by example as well.
Single-handily he changed the Knicks from a team that gave no effort at the defensive end of the floor. Even before Mike Woodson took over, the Knicks had made strides defensively, allowing only 94.6 PPG on the season. But once Woodson took over and everyone bought in, the Knicks have remarkably allowed only 86.0 PPG in their last nine games.
Much of the credit goes to Chandler, who's been a guy that the others can follow all season. He has a ring and that's what everyone in the Knicks locker room wants. He's a guy others listen to and his actions often speak louder than words.
Looking at the entire season, Chandler's been the Knicks MVP this season. Not only that, but he's been the one player they can't go without and it shows.
The Knicks are a much different team when Chandler is on the bench. Opposing teams can attack the paint at will and often get multiple possessions from missed shots.
That doesn't happen when Chandler's on the floor, which is why he needs to stay on the floor more often. The Knicks can't have him in foul trouble every game, forced to turn to a smaller lineup that's less talented defensively.
While it's true that Chandler needs to stay out of constant foul trouble, he needs to start biting his tongue more often as well.
I love the fact that he's an emotional player, but he's got 10 technical fouls on the season. Three more earns him a one-game suspension. In the middle of a fight for the playoffs, with an extremely brutal schedule down the stretch, it's out of the question that Chandler has to spend a game watching in street clothes.
He means that much to the Knicks.
Chandler's brought passion and energy to the club at both ends of the floor. The little things he does on a nightly basis can't be replaced. It's something the Knicks haven't had in a real long time.
What Chandler's done is to help change the culture in New York.
It's no longer acceptable to not give effort at both ends of the floor. It's no longer acceptable to tolerate losing.
It's about doing what it takes to win and Chandler brings that on a nightly basis.
He's been the Knicks most valuable player and one they certainly can't replace.
