NBA Trades: Why Cleveland Cavs Will Regret Gifting Ramon Sessions to LA Lakers

Lindsey YoungJun 7, 2018

Two weeks have passed since the 2012 NBA trade deadline, and one has to wonder if the Cleveland Cavaliers are second-guessing their decision to deal point guard Ramon Sessions to the Los Angeles Lakers.

My bet? Regret is a common theme among Cleveland fans.

On March 15, Sessions was traded, along with Christian Eyenga, to the Lakers for a protected first-round pick in the 2012 NBA draft, Jason Kapono and Luke Walton. In his first game, he put up seven points, four rebounds and five assists over 19 minutes on the court.

Although Sessions initially came off the bench in L.A., it didn't take long for Lakers coach Mike Brown to show his confidence in the 25-year-old.

Following a Friday morning shootaround on March 23, Brown said the following:

"

I'm going to start Sessions tonight. The biggest thing is there's a comfort level there with all of us and Sessions. If you talk to him, he'll tell you at the end of the Dallas game when he was on the floor, there was a comfort level that he had out there running the offense.

"

Sessions started that evening, and he hasn't looked back since. In his short time on the West Coast, the South Carolina native has averaged 13.6 points, seven assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

Critics may point out that Sessions has been with four teams over only five years, but it appears as if the young PG has finally found his niche.

"

Sessions just doesn't make the Lakers a more complete team; he also makes them significantly more competitive. His athleticism and vision are far superior to Fisher's despite the fact that Fisher provided the Lakers with some intangibles and locker room leadership. Sessions makes the Lakers a serious contender when before they were right on the fringe of being one.

"

While the Lakers are steadily improving with Sessions on the roster, the trade hasn't worked out quite as nicely for his former team.

Since March 15, Cleveland holds an abysmal record of 1-6. While starting point guard Kyrie Irving continues to be the Cavs' star, backup Donald Sloan (brought in to replace Sessions) is averaging only three PPG, and former LA forward Walton is averaging 2.5.

Sure, Cleveland gained a first-round draft pick. However, L.A. definitely ran with the bargain on this deal. At this point, the Cavs can only hope that first-rounder pays off in a big way.

And Sessions? How is he adapting to his new home in the land of legends?

“It’s a little different being in Cleveland, Milwaukee and Minneapolis,” Sessions told Yahoo! Sports. “The people in those cities really knew who you are. But now I got people around the world that know who I am now.”

As the season continues, look for Sessions to continue playing a big role in the Lakers' search for another championship.
