Todd McShay 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Most Intriguing Selections by McShay in Round 1

John RozumMar 29, 2012

Earlier this week, ESPN's Todd McShay released in latest mock draft. As expected, it's another good mock from the draft expert, however, there are also some intriguing picks worth pointing out.

Still, with roughly one month until the 2012 NFL draft, the only for sure selections appear to be Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Matt Kalil. So, we obviously have to look elsewhere for some interesting possibilities.

Arizona Cardinals: Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB (South Carolina)

To some extent, Melvin Ingram is an intriguing draft selection wherever he goes, simply because he's arguably the most versatile prospect in the draft. The man can basically play anywhere in the front seven and even help out on special teams.

In Arizona, Ingram is a great fit as the Cardinals do need to spruce up the front seven. They allowed an average of 124 rush yards per game (ranked No. 21) and 231 pass yards per game (ranked No. 17). With a strong secondary playing behind him, Ingram would make an immediate impact for the Cards.

Not to mention, but shutting down NFC West running backs like Frank Gore and Marshawn Lynch are needed to contend for the division.

Denver Broncos: Michael Brockers, DT (LSU)

It would be surprising to see Brockers fall this far to Denver at No. 25, however, it is an interesting fit. Brockers has the ability to play in a 4-3 or 3-4 front, which makes him quite the appealing defensive tackle.

Denver on the other hand, runs a 4-3 and did allow 126 rush yards per game (ranked No. 22) and failed to get consistent interior pressure.

In passing situations, new defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio can switch to a 4-2-5 look, which keeps Brockers off the center and allows him to work one-on-one against guards. Presenting Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil as outside pressure, Brockers would immediately thrive in the Orange Crush.

Baltimore Ravens: Harrison Smith, Safety (Notre Dame)

The Baltimore Ravens will need another safety to eventually replace Ed Reed, but Notre Dame's Harrison Smith is a bit of a stretch for their Round 1 selection.

Although Smith has good instincts to sit back in a Cover 1, 2 or 3, the Ravens still have Bernard Pollard and Lardarius Webb in the secondary with Reed. Smith is more of a mid to late second-rounder (if available there, then the Ravens can get him) and Baltimore needs replenish the offensive line.

A guy like Wisconsin's Pete Konz or Kevin Zeitler isn't as much of a stretch, because an offense that revolves around running back Ray Rice needs to keep the ground game moving.

Rice may be arguably the best and most complete back in the game, but he won't do work again without the hogs rolling defensive front sevens off the line.
