NFL Rumors: Re-Signing Braylon Edwards Would Be Another Bad Move for Jets

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

To say the New York Jets need to add a receiver this offseason would be an understatement.

Plaxico Burress is a free agent, Santonio Holmes hasn't exactly been happy in New York and there are no other true weapons in the receiving corps.

But bringing back Braylon Edwards should not be an option.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reported on Tuesday:

"

Rex Ryan says they could find starting-caliber receiver in the draft. Didn't rule out Braylon Edwards. #Jets

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) March 27, 2012"

First of all, while Edwards behaved decently with the Jets, he's never been known as the greatest team player. Not only did he have an ugly split with the Cleveland Browns before joining the Jets, there were also reports that he became disgruntled with the San Francisco 49ers last season because, well, he wasn't getting the ball enough.

The Jets organization and clubhouse is already bordering on disaster. Why bring in another potential distraction, after trading for the sideshow that is Tim Tebow? You would think Rex Ryan and the Jets would be tired of the chaos swirling around them.

But, beyond that, there's also the fact that Edwards is approaching 30 years old now. He's not exactly a spring chicken. He also suffered a knee and shoulder injury last season, limiting him to nine games before he was cut in late December. Forgive me for not being overly enthused about the former Jets wideout.

Of course, the Jets seem to welcome drama and inconsistency. It's why they went 8-8 last season in the first place. Perhaps this isn't out of the question, for the Jets to welcome Edwards back with open arms then watch in horror as everything collapses around them.

I don't doubt that Edwards can work somewhere in the NFL. He's certainly not a lost cause and he showed he could still produce with the Jets.

But re-signing Edwards is the last thing the Jets need. At a time when they should be working toward a stable, functioning clubhouse, they appear to be going in the wrong direction.

Move forward, New York Jets. Forget about those glory years when you somehow sneaked into two AFC Championship games in a row.
