NBA Rumors: 76ers PG Lou Williams Smart to Not Think About Contract Right Now

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

Lou Williams is contending for the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award, but he would most certainly ruin his shot at winning it by putting his attention on his contract with the Philadelphia 76ers

He knows this, which is why he is waiting until the season is over to worry about his future.

According to The Times Herald, Williams can opt-out of his contract this summer, which would make him a free agent.

No doubt he is thinking about his future, because let's be honest, who isn't these days? However, Williams isn't going to let it consume him, which is the right thing to do.

"

"I obviously have the option to opt-out, but I still have a year there, so I haven’t really thought about it,” Williams said. “I’ve just been trying to play well, then in the summertime we can let the business side take care of itself."

If Williams were to make any sort of declaration about his plans for next season, it could potentially hinder the team's chemistry, which would be devastating.

Currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, the 76ers need to focus on winning against the league's best.

Should Williams decide now that he doesn't want to be in Philadelphia next year, then it wouldn't bode well for the team.

Even if he were to announce that he wouldn't use his opt-out clause, it wouldn't be a smart move. Sure, it wouldn't hinder the team as a whole, but it could affect Williams' style of play. It would be a premature decision, and there is no doubt that he would constantly be wondering if he did the right thing or not.

It's best to just wait at the end of the year to decide on his future.

Despite not being a starter, Williams leads the 76ers in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game. He's a very important role player, but he could easily be a starter for another team.

Since the Eastern Conference is super strong at the top with the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls, Williams would be wise to jump ship and find a new home in the Western Conference.

He isn't going to win big in Philadelphia, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he stuck around for another year. After all, the 76ers are the only team he has played for, and his familiarity with the organization makes life easier.

Whatever Williams ends up doing, making the decision after the season is the smartest move he could make. The 76ers are going to the playoffs, and if they stay focused enough they can make some major noise.

Of course, the Heat and the Bulls would beat them in a series, but there's no denying the 76ers could make the top teams sweat in a major way if they focus on the present and not on their future endeavors.
