NBA Free Agents 2012: 4 Reasons Why Deron Williams Is a Lock for Mavericks
Deron Williams is trapped in New Jersey for the time being.
While the Nets invested a lot in trying to acquire him, it's not looking promising for them to keep him. He's saying certain things to suggest that he might stay, but his heart isn't in it.
It's akin to a man on a luxury cruise his parents paid for because they're trying to set him up with a woman that annoys him.
He's saying things that are as close as they can be to being committal without actually committing to anything. He just doesn't want to end it until the boat gets to shore and he can get away from her.
Meanwhile he's skyping every day with a hottie in Dallas.
So bear that in mind when he says things like this, as reported in the New York Post,
""[The Barclays Center] is going to be state of the art, it's going to be the best arena in the NBA hands down," Williams said. "I’m excited to see it when it’s complete and hopefully play there."
"
Notice how it seems committal, but isn't?
"Hopefully play there?" He has all the freedom in the world to just say "play there." The word "hopefully" makes it noncommittal.
Or this,
""It’s definitely fun being in New York, living in New York, I’m enjoying my time here," Williams said. "I have had a couple of events now in Brooklyn and I’m starting to get a feel for how things are over here and I think people are excited about a team coming here."
"
Might as well say, "I'm enjoying my time on this cruise."
The first reason that Williams isn't going to stay in New Jersey is that he's coming as close to out and out saying it without actually saying it.
Which brings us to the second reason: The woman he's trapped on the cruise with.
Let's be fair to Williams. Unlike Dwight Howard or Caremlo Anthony, he never asked to be traded. He never gave out any lists. He never wanted to be traded. He didn't even know he was traded until he learned on SportsCenter.
Point being, he's not obligated to New Jersey just because they traded for him.
And really, she is not that hot. She went out and got her hair done by adding Gerald Wallace three quarters of the way through the cruise, but that's not enough to make her pretty.
In fact, the Nets are pretty close to downright ugly, and getting uglier. The three-game losing skid to losing teams sure isn't helping anything.
Finally, there's the hottie in Dallas, and her name is Dirk Nowitzki. There was a chance that New Jersey was going to get a makeover in the form of Dwight Howard, but that's not going to happen now. That's why they went and got that perm.
After that, there's just not any free agents of a five-star caliber on the market. New Jersey doesn't have any chance of landing anyone that can compete with Nowitzki.
When you combine all that with the fact that Williams is from Dallas and would love to play there, according to Ken Berger of CBS Sports:
"A person who has worked with Williams on a daily basis in the past reiterated this week that going home to Dallas remains an overwhelmingly attractive option for the 27-year-old point guard, who was shipped to the Nets against his will in what turned out to be a brilliant move by the Utah Jazz last February.
"
In other words, the hottie at home in Dallas is purtier than the ugly chick in Brooklyn. The season docks in about a month. That's about how long Williams will be sticking around.
