Liverpool FC: Shell-Shocked Reds Need to Freshen It Up by Bringing in Youth
Liverpool were winning 2-0 against Queens Park Rangers, away from home at Loftus Road until the 75th minute in a league game on Wednesday night. Somehow, the Reds found a way to concede three goals in the remaining time to lose this match and make the already once very hard task of achieving fourth look out of reach and impossible even while 27 points are there still to be played for.
Maybe the Liverpool players were shell-shocked.
Not after defeat, but when Dirk Kuyt scored to make it 2-0 in the 72nd minute of the match. They might not have believed that two of the chances to score had been actually taken, one of which though was an absolute peach. In the current season, Liverpool have scored less than Lionel Messi of La Liga and have the lowest conversion rate in the English Premier League. Just to bring to light the reason for being baffled.

For a team that is used to winning, at least a few seasons before the current three season 'rebuilding', a 2-0 lead should be the order of the day more frequently than not. Another reason why the team might have thought that the game they were playing in was not real.
It has not been often that Liverpool have enjoyed a 2-0 lead against the lesser teams (with all due respect) in-spite of their huffing and puffing.
Liverpool's season has not been filled with luck, and Wednesday night was no different as there was no explanation for the result like manager of Liverpool, Kenny Dalglish also said in his interview. Having said that, I for one am glad that QPR actually turned it around.
Did I believe that Liverpool could get fourth place before Wednesday's fixtures? Yes.
However, Arsenal needed to lose against Everton, as this was one of the tough games for the Gunners they could have dropped points in. As Arsenal ran out 1-0 winners, a victory at QPR for Liverpool would have kept alive false hopes for fourth.
The situation now though, can get very different, interesting and fruitful for the Reds.
There are nine games still to play in the league. They are hungry, disappointed (from the NextGen tour) and talented young Turks needing a chance to prove themselves. It is certainly a sparkling combination for Liverpool to trust and employ for the remaining games.
Raheem Sterling is always mentioned as someone who should be given a chance in the absence of wingers. Stewart Downing is certainly rising in confidence but apart from him, there is not a lot much. Sterling is for the future, but should start making strides for getting there eventually. His finishing is certainly very good as compared to what the current lot have delivered this season.
Besides the former QPR player, Liverpool should try out Joao Carlos, Suso, Jon Flanagan, Jack Robinson, Conor Coady etc. I could actually fill out a full team or maybe even a squad. The reason being, the benchmark has been abysmally low this season in the league from Liverpool's senior pros. Thus, I do not see why these youngsters do not deserve a shot at glory and a chance to flex their adrenaline.
Will Kenny Dalglish try out these deserving talents?
Or will he keep pushing for fourth with the first team, which in all truth doesn't seem to be working either.
Though only time will lead us to the outcome of these questions, I sincerely hope that at least one of the reserves plays a lot of games next season in the first team. The first step will be to start with them in the remaining games now.
Thanks for reading.
