College Football Recruiting 2013: Ranking the Top In-State Commitments
Last week, I wrote a piece ranking the top out-of-state commitments thus far for 2013. Today, I'm staying at home, in the sense of ranking the top 10 in-state commitments for 2013.
It's always crucial to lock down your state in recruiting. You want the best players in your backyard to stay in your backyard. Period. For this list, these are the top commitments who fit that bill.
Recruiting is a tricky game, but it's the lifeblood of a college football program. Here are the top in-state commitments.
10. Dee Liner, DL
1 of 10Native State: Alabama
Commitment: Auburn
Liner, rated a 5-star recruit by Scout.com, is a 6'4", 268-pound defensive lineman from Alabama. He can play DT or DE and is playmaker for a defensive front. Liner will add depth, quickness, range and sheer talent to the Tigers DL.
9. Daniel McMillan, LB
2 of 10Native State: Florida
Commitment: Florida
At 6'2" and 220 pounds, McMillan is a future playmaker at the MIKE 'backer spot. He's very rangy, has good instincts and good ball vision.
McMillan can plug run alleys with solid strength and tenacity, yet he has the speed to hawk sweeps and plays on the flanks.
8. Jalin Marshall, RB/ATH
3 of 10Native State: Ohio
Commitment: Ohio State
Marshall is a 6'1", 190-pound football player who can play QB, RB, WR or DB. I think his best position in college could indeed be RB, as his natural run instincts, play speed, agility and quickness all translate well there.
7. Derrick Griffin, WR
4 of 10Native State: Texas
Commitment: Texas A&M
At 6'6" and 215 pounds, Griffin can combat press coverage due to his length adn strength off the line. He can bully DBs around the field and is matchup nightmare. He's headed to College Station, where he should be a prime-time weapon in the red zone, at the very least.
6. Shane Morris, QB
5 of 10Native State: Michigan
Commitment: Michigan
Morris committed to Big Blue as a sophomore and now enters his senior year as one of the elite QB prospects in the national 2013 class. He stands 6'3", 190 pounds and gets it out lefty. Morris has great arm strength, solid set-up quickness and good athleticism to make things happen.
5. O.J. Howard, TE
6 of 10Native State: Alabama
Commitment: Alabama
Hailing from Prattville, Howard could be the best player from Alabama for 2013. He's a 6'5", 225-pounder who can play TE, DE or OLB.
Howard is an amazing athlete and has a high ceiling. He could be the best incoming TE prospect Alabama has ever signed.
4. Tyrone Swoopes, QB
7 of 10Native State: Texas
Commitment: Texas
Swoopes is a 6'5", 225-pound dual threat QB from the Lone Star State by way of Whitewright. His throwing skills are improving by the period, but there's no denying Swoopes' dazzling athleticism and playmaking ability.
3. Ricky Seals-Jones, WR
8 of 10Native State: Texas
Commitment: Texas
At 6'5" and 215 pounds, Seals-Jones currently competes as a QB and free safety for his Sealy High School team in Texas. Yet, when he gets to Austin, Seals-Jones' length, speed, hands and playmaking skills will see him become a WR or maybe even a dynamic pass-catching TE.
2. Thomas Tyner, RB
9 of 10Native State: Oregon
Commitment: Oregon
The Ducks got themselves an awfully good one here in Tyner, as he's a 6'0" RB prospect who weighs more than 200 pounds and could be the fastest player in the country.
Can you imagine what Chip Kelly is going to do with him when he gets in the Oregon offense?
1. Adam Breneman, TE
10 of 10Native State: Pennsylvania
Commitment: Penn State
Breneman is the No. 1 TE in the country on my board, and he sits at No. 1 on this list because it was crucial for Penn State to keep him home.
The 6'5", 220-pound pass-catching TE was a huge recruiting victory for Bill O'Brien. The former Patriots offensive chief knows a thing or two about using tight ends.
