Coming into Saturday the field was pretty wide open, with Renegade a slight favorite but Chief Wallabee, Golden Tempo, Commandment and Emerging Market not far behind.
After Golden Tempo was held out of The Preakness, the drama for both that race and the Belmont was lessened with no Triple Crown on the line. It was the sixth time in the past eight years that The Preakness was held with without the possibility of a Triple Crown, a growing trend in the sport.
As the Associated Press reported in early May, Maryland racing officials are considering moving The Preakness back by a week to alleviate concerns from trainers and owners about the short turnaround time between the Triple Crown races. That would inevitably lead to the Belmont Stakes being pushed back as well.
Justify was the last Triple Crown winner in 2018, just three years removed from American Pharoah in 2015. Before that, however, you have to go all the way back to the 1970s for horses that pulled off the feat (Secretariat, 1973; Seattle Slew, 1977; Affirmed, 1978).
Golden Tempo winning both the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness will obviously call into question whether it could have been a Triple Crown winner as well. Ah, what might have been. Still, an amazing season for the horse and trainer Cherie DeVaux.
