Trade Odds for 4 Teams in Play for Tebow After Peyton Manning Signs with Broncos
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Denver Broncos are expected to sign Peyton Manning:
"""Manning to Broncos...more coming on Espn
— Chris Mortensen (@mortreport) March 19, 2012"
With that, what will happen to Tim Tebow?
Well, one option for the Denver Broncos is to trade him away. To that end, here are four teams who could potentially be in play for the popular quarterback.
Jacksonville Jaguars
1 of 4The Jacksonville Jaguars have two quarterbacks in Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne.
Neither of which are notably established in the league. However, the Jaguars also have arguably the NFL's weakest receiving corps as well.
That said, we have to anticipate the Jaguars making a move for Tebow. Strictly from a business perspective, it's a smart idea considering how small of a market Jacksonville is compared to other franchises.
Tebow will definitely draw a crowd, raise merchandise sales and ratings on TV and radio.
The question is whether Jacksonville wants to add another quarterback. Henne was recently signed, according Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union; so if the Jags pursue Tebow, would Gabbert be the likely odd-man out?
Yes, because he only has one year at the helm and isn't as established as the other two. Tebow's popularity and Henne's experience would trump Gabbert's youth, however, Jacksonville could get something for the former Missouri standout.
Odds: 1 in 4
Miami Dolphins
2 of 4According to ESPN, the Miami Dolphins met with Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers and another veteran may also be in the mix.
Tania Ganuli of the Florida Times-Union, also writes that the Dolphins are expected to meet with David Garrard:
"That will start on Monday, when Garrard goes to South Florida to visit the Dolphins, a source confirmed, and said Garrard's next likely stop is with the St. Louis Rams.
"
Now that Manning is in Denver, though, it would be surprising to see San Francisco part ways with Smith. Lest we forget about Matt Moore as well. He finished the 2011 campaign with 16 touchdowns to just nine picks and almost 2,500 yards.
Moore clearly developed last season and with the possibility of Garrard, Smith and now Tim Tebow in the mix, the Dolphins quarterback situation is potentially deep.
Tim Kephard of CBS 4 Miami, writes that Tebow would be a business addition:
"Acquiring Tebow wouldn’t necessarily be about football, it would be about business.
Fins owner Stephen Ross is all about celebrities and not necessarily what’s best for the Dolphins franchise.
"
All things considered, though, Miami doesn't need Tebow and both new head coach Joe Philbin as well as offensive coordinator Mike Sherman do not run that read-option, improvisation offense.
Odds: 1 in 15
New England Patriots
3 of 4Although it was before the Manning news, it's fitting how things happen and could potentially turn out. According to Louise Cornetta of ESPNBoston.com, fellow ESPN writer John Clayton mentioned rumors of Tebow to New England:
"""John Clayton on ESPN Radio said if Broncos get Manning the rumor circulating is Denver would trade Tebow to #Patriots
— Louise Cornetta (@ESPNLKCornetta) March 17, 2012"
This comes as no surprise, because Josh McDaniels was Denver's head coach when the Broncos drafted Tim Tebow in 2010.
Now back in New England, Tom Brady does need a backup quarterback who has proven to win in the NFL. At the very least, Tebow's dynamics would bring a versatile package to the Pats and allow New England to get creative.
The Patriots also have the ammo with six draft picks in the first three rounds this April; so what it comes down to is whether or not Bill Belichick and Co. want to make a move for Tebow.
After all, if there's any one team that can get what it wants, it's the Patriots.
Odds: 1 in 8
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
4 of 4Surprise, surprise another franchise from the State of Florida: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Arguably, this is the best fit for Tim Tebow from a divisional and personnel perspective. This is because the Bucs have made some big signings this offseason and the NFC South isn't too well-known for dominant pass defenses.
With Vincent Jackson out wide, tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. and a potentially dominant rushing attack with LeGarrette Blount and guard Carl Nicks, Tampa has increased expectations for 2012.
Include a Top Five overall draft selection and the Buccaneers are an appealing team as well. Now yes, Tebow would likely remain the backup to Josh Freeman for the starting role. However, Tebow's versatility will benefit Tampa's offense—especially with a new head coach in Greg Schiano.
Tampa Bay also isn't too much further from Gainesville, FL. than Jacksonville, so the Gator fans would swarm to The New Sombrero as well.
By comparison to the Jaguars and Patriots, though, the Bucs aren't nearly as an attractive landing spot for Tebow and they won't be as interested as Jacksonville or New England.
Not to mention Freeman would remain the starter, therefore, a lot depends on whether Tampa has thoughts of selecting a middle-round quarterback in the draft.
