2012 NFL Free Agents: David Garrard Would Be a Great Backup QB for Rams

Nicholas GossJun 1, 2018

Free agent quarterback David Garrard would be a fantastic backup quarterback with the St. Louis Rams.

According to Pro Football Talk, Garrard will visit the NFC West team after he visits with the Miami Dolphins on Monday.

"

St. Louis’ new coaching staff is actively seeking an upgrade on former backup A.J. Feeley. The Rams showed interest in Shaun Hill before he re-signed with the Lions. Garrard appears to be Plan B.

Garrard isn't a bad plan B for the Rams, who need a quarterback with starting experience for next season in case young starter Sam Bradford suffers through more injury problems.

Garrard, 34, missed all of last season with a back injury, but appears ready to return to the NFL for the 2012 season.

From 2008 through 2010, Garrard threw for at least 2,700 yards with an average of just under 18 touchdown passes per season. In 2007, he led the Jaguars to a 11-5 record and a playoff win on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Garrard has solid experience and would be a capable quarterback who could even win some games if called upon.

After starting all 16 games his rookie season, Bradford played in just 10 games last season because of injury. As a result, the Rams finished with the second worst record in football, earning the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, which they have since traded to the Washington Redskins.

Bradford's injury concerns make the need for a quality backup quarterback a top priority for the Rams this offseason.

Garrard would be an inexpensive signing and will be hungry to prove he still has something left as an NFL player.

Signing Garrard as a backup would be a low-risk, high reward pickup for the Rams that could really help them next season.
