2012 NFL Mock Draft: Picks That Won't Sit Well with Fans

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, I know a thing or two about being infuriated by draft selections.

No, I'm not talking about Ricky Williams here—I was one of the few people in Philadelphia that really liked Donovan McNabb.

I'm talking about 2010, when Eagles fans really wanted safety Earl Thomas to fill a big team need and instead the team traded up and selected defensive end Brandon Graham from Michigan.

Or how about in 1995, when the team selected workout-warrior Mike Mamula with the seventh overall pick while Warren Sapp was still on the board?

Those are just a few examples, but believe me when I tell you that I know draft pain. So will your team know draft pain this offseason?

Let's take a look.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Andrew Luck will make Colts fans quickly forget about the pain of Peyton Manning's departure from the team.

2. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor *

Griffin may not be worth three first-round picks and a second-round pick, but he'll ease the pain that comes with watching Rex Grossman lead your team to defeat week in and week out.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

I know, I know—offensive lineman are boring and selecting a player like Kalil when an wide receiver like Justin Blackmon is available might not sit well with fans, especially when the injury-prone Percy Harvin is the best pass-catching option.

But Kalil is the best offensive tackle on the board and will protect Christian Ponder's blind side. Explosive as Blackmon is, I think Kalil will be the better player in the long haul. Vikings fans may be disgruntled and bored with this selection, but it's the smart pick.

4. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Drafting a stud like Richardson to fill the void at running back will sit very, very well with Browns fans.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

With Trent Richardson off the board and Vincent Jackson in town, Bucs fans should be happy to add the best defensive player in the draft.

6. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Sam Bradford plus Justin Blackmon equals happy Rams fans.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

The versatile Kirkpatrick—he can play corner or possibly safety at the NFL level—isn't going to send confetti streaming through any Jacksonville draft parties. Frankly, I probably have him higher than a lot of other people out there.

But Kirkpatrick has legit game and will be a nice addition for Jacksonville.

Confetti or no confetti.

8. Miami Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

With Peyton Manning no longer an option and Matt Flynn headed to the Seattle Seahawks, the Dolphins look like prime candidates to select Tannehill.

Here's why Miami probably won't be pleased about this: The rookie quarterback they are drafting isn't Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III, and they failed to acquire Peyton Manning.

Tannehill gets to start his career as the consolation prize Miami fans never really wanted.

9. Carolina Panthers: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Carolina fans will feel a little nostalgic drafting a big and athletic defensive end from North Carolina with a top-10 pick.

10. Buffalo Bills: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

With Mario Williams signed, the team will look to fill a huge need that has been open since Jason Peters left town.

11. Kansas City Chiefs: Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

The Chiefs will be glad to add this human eclipse to middle of the defensive line.

12. Seattle Seahawks: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

No, he isn't Mario Williams. However, he is an excellent edge rusher that will improve Seattle's defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Kevin Kolb is back in town. Now he has someone to protect his blind side.

14. Dallas Cowboys: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

The best guard prospect in years fills a huge need for the Cowboys.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Kuechly, MLB, Boston College

Yes, Eagles fans will be thrilled if this is the selection. And with the team yet to address linebacker via free agency, it's actually a possibility.

16. New York Jets: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, USC

Upshaw is the perfect fit for Rex Ryan's defense.

17. Cincinnati Bengals: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama **

The Bengals aptly fill the void left by Jonathan Joseph a year ago with this pick.

18. San Diego Chargers: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

The addition of Floyd alongside free agent Robert Meachem will have a whole lot of Chargers fans wondering, "Vincent Jackson who?"

19. Chicago Bears: Nick Perry, DE, USC

The uber-athletic Nick Perry paired with Julius Peppers will be frightening for opposing quarterbacks.

20. Tennessee Titans: Als hon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

I have a feeling Peyton Manning will be a Titan. The more weapons the merrier, right?

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

A huge need for the Bengals is filled here with this exciting acquisition.

22. Cleveland Browns: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

Cleveland fans might not know who Stephen Hill is unless they are fans of the NFL Combine. The first time he goes streaking down the sideline and scores on a deep pass, they'll learn to love him.

23. Detroit Lions: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Okay, so what fan wants a team to draft a center in the first round?

Nobody wants that.

But it's a smart pick at a need position with a very good player available. It makes sense, even if it severely bores most Lion fans.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

A poor combine drops him. The flashes of potential he showed at LSU make him a steal this late.

25. Denver Broncos: Devon Still, DT, Penn State

Still will be a nice addition to a defensive line in need of some depth.

26. Houston Texans: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

I think Wright will be the perfect complement to Andre Johnson on the outside.

27. New England Patriots: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State ***

This would have been a wide receiver were it not for the signing of Brandon Lloyd. Cox will make life easier for Vince Wilfork on New England's line.

28. Green Bay Packers: Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson

The Packers need to improve the defense line, and Thompson does just that.

29. Baltimore Ravens: Jared Crick, DE, Nebraska

Not a sexy pick, but a good one for one of the more underrated players in this draft.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

You can never have too many good cornerbacks.

31. New England Patriots: Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

Mercilus led the NCAA in sacks in 2011 with 16 and would fill a need off the edge in New England.

32. New York Giants: Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina

As if the Giants needed another elite athlete in the front seven on defense. Brown is a great fit for them.

* The Redskins traded the sixth pick in the first round, along with their second-round pick this year and first-round picks in 2013 and 2014 to St. Louis for the second overall pick.

** From Oakland in the Carson Palmer trade.

*** From Cincinnati.

*** From New Orleans in last year's Mark Ingram trade.

Hit me up on Twitter—I've tweeted from Lehigh's campus before. Seriously.
