What the Kansas City Chiefs' Free-Agency Activity Means for Team in 2012

Bill RobbinsMar 18, 2012

Heading into the offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs needed to address many holes on their current roster.

Less than a week into the free-agency period, KC has done just that by adding four players on offense.

What will this recent free-agent flurry by the Chiefs mean for their squad in 2012?

Read on and see.

The Chiefs Will Have One of the Best 1-2 Punches at RB in the League

Heading in this season, the Chiefs were already slated to have a strong rushing attack with the return of Pro Bowler Jamaal Charles.

With the signing of free-agent RB Peyton Hillis, they instantly became much better at that position.

Hillis rushed for nearly 1,200 yards back in 2009 and should compliment Charles well in Kansas City's ground game.

I expect this duo to do great things this year and return the Chiefs' rushing attack to prominence once again.

The Chiefs Will Have One of the Best Right Tackles in the League

Former Texan Eric Winston became the best free-agent RT available when he was released by the Texans last Monday.

The Chiefs jumped at the chance at getting him and now have one of the premiere right tackles  in the NFL.

The days of Barry Richardson manning that spot will likely be over as KC has massively upgraded a position that was one of their biggest holes heading into this offseason.

There Will Be Some Competition for Starting QB Matt Cassel

Back in February, Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said that the Chiefs would provide competition for starting QB Matt Cassel.

They did just that with the addition of free-agent Brady Quinn.

Even though he has been a backup for most of his career, Quinn will be the best competition that Cassel has faced since he took over as the team's starter back in 2009.

The Chiefs Will Have Insurance for TE Tony Moeaki

Tight end was a position that the Chiefs severely lacked in depth last season.

They have corrected that with the recent signing of free-agent TE Kevin Boss to a three-year deal.

Boss is a former starter for both the Giants and Raiders who has the size to create mismatches for opposing defenses when he is on the field.

With TE Tony Moeaki coming off of an ACL injury, the addition of Boss will provide solid insurance at the tight end position for the next few seasons.

The Chiefs Are Serious about Building a Strong Offense Around QB Matt Cassel

If this recent flurry of free-agent signings by the Chiefs shows you anything, it should send the message that the organization is desperately trying to make life better for their starting quarterback in the future.

After inking a starting RT and two more offensive weapons on offense for Cassel, KC should be loaded with enough talent on offense for next season and beyond.

This also means that there will be less excuses for sub-par play from the QB position in the near future.

With playmakers in nearly every area on offense, the Chiefs should be much improved in 2012.

The Chiefs Will Have Better Depth in Multiple Areas on Their Roster

6 of 6

One of the biggest issues that the Chiefs had to deal with last year was their lack of depth throughout their roster.

With the early FA additions of Hillis, Boss, Winston and Quinn, the Chiefs have already made significant upgrades in several areas of the team.

Hillis and Boss are both quality backups who have been starters, while Winston is a Pro Bowl-caliber RT and Quinn is a good backup QB.

Five days into this year's free-agency period, KC is well on their way to improving the depth on their roster for 2012.
