What Happens Now to the New York Knicks?

Henry BrownJun 3, 2018

No NBA team has provided more drama this season than the New York Knicks. As a matter of fact, the 2011-12 Knicks edition has all the makings of a reality television show.

Reality television shows are the most talked about and most viewed shows on a daily basis.

Everywhere you look, someone is creating a new reality show. From "American Idol" to "America's Next Top Model," the way we watch television now has changed in the last decade.

A few seasons ago, the NFL's Dallas Cowboys had their own following on HBO: "4th and Long." The New York Knicks haven't officially launched their own reality series, but if they did, you could call it: "Trouble in Manhattan."

New York has had its shares of trouble, but the Knicks were hit with the unexpected on Wednesday when head coach Mike D'Antoni stepped down. D'Antoni's resignation surprised many people, including several players: Amar'e Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin.

Although the Knicks (19-24) are only 3-7 in their last 10 games, New York is tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Knicks survived an 8-15 start before Lin was inserted in the starting lineup, sparking a 7-1 run to put themselves back in playoff contention.

When Carmelo Anthony returned from an injury on Feb. 20th against New Jersey, everyone wondered whether Anthony and Lin could coexist. Lin emerged as a 20-point-plus scorer during Anthony's absence, but has not been the same player since Anthony came back. As a team, the Knicks are 3-8 since 'Melo's return.

A team that many picked to be contenders in the East after the emergence of Lin, are now wondering what has happened to the franchise.

One question that should be asked is: Who should get the blame?

Should the onus fall on Anthony, or was D'Antoni set in his own ways? Anyway you look at it, the Knicks are a different team now.

Assistant Mike Woodson has taken on the duties as interim head coach. The former Atlanta Hawks head man now has a huge task in front of him: restoring peace to the Knicks' locker room. Woodson, who was fired by the Hawks after the 2010 season, is known as a strict coach but even he may have trouble putting the pieces of this puzzle back together.

Talent is not an issue with players like Anthony, Stoudemire, Lin, Tyson Chandler, Baron Davis and recent pickup J.R. Smith. However, the problem may be much deeper than that.

One of the Knicks' main weaknesses is defense. Other than Chandler and backup Jared Jefferies, New York has problems stopping the other team from scoring points. The only logical solution for New York would be to trade either Anthony or Stoudemire, as both players would bring huge dividends to a team that needs help on the offensive side.

Anthony, a local New Yorker, joined the Knicks during a midseason trade last season. The enigmatic star has been selfish at times throughout his career. Several New York fans have voiced their displeasure over Anthony's behavior, but the Knicks' front office have failed to make a move.

New York's season has been a major soap opera. From Anthony to Lin's emergence to bringing in Smith and Davis—players with checkered pasts, the Knicks are must see television.

What happens next remains to be seen. Tune in tomorrow, as the saga continues.
