WWE: 5 Reasons Sheamus' Career Begins Now
In just 16 days, Sheamus will compete in his second career WrestleMania match to make the card. Just to show his meteoric rise, it will be for the World Heavyweight Championship against unlikely champion Daniel Bryan.
His hot start came after a short ECW stint in June 2009. By the end of October, Sheamus had already moved on to the RAW brand. As one of the surviving men at Survivor Series, he won a battle royal to be No. 1 contender for John Cena's WWE Championship. A shocking victory later and Sheamus had become WWE Champion in less than six months. The title would be lost shy of WrestleMania, where a grudge match with Triple H took place. Sheamus lost, but he won the war with The Game. He would then win back his title at Fatal 4-Way.
As a two-time former WWE Champion, Sheamus was a fast-rising superstar who was already on par with the rest of the main event scene. His stock would fall and, without making him lose much, Sheamus would become less relevant. It was almost as if he just didn't matter for a time.
In the last few months, everything has changed for Sheamus. His last year, which got kicked off by being the last pick in the WWE draft, put him into a good position on Smackdown. Now it is a fresh start to the career of The Great White.
Here are five reasons why this is basically a pushing of the reset button for Sheamus and his career.
Initial Push Was Too Fast
1 of 5It was just too much given to Sheamus way too fast. He was beating just about everybody and, even if he was just a destructive monster heel, there was no developing babyface to mow him down. The closest thing to that for Sheamus was Cena, but not even Cena could have sustained success against Sheamus.
He was just too big, too fast. The last guy to have that kind of success was Brock Lesnar, and he didn't stick around very long. It also became difficult to move Sheamus out of the spotlight once he was shoved there and made to stay there for a while.
Sheamus was just given so many accolades early on in his WWE career, almost as if they were rushing to sustain him as a big deal. It wasn't anything gradual for Sheamus, which probably would have done him a lot of good.
He Paid His Dues
2 of 5The wheels start to come to a screeching halt at some point. For Sheamus, they slammed hard and he nearly crashed entirely. He was made to be the King of the Ring, wearing this ridiculous get-up. This all stems from Sheamus and his place in the company. Apparently, the outfit itself was done as a mockery.
From then on, Sheamus was not relevant as a King of the Ring. This was when an apparent curse of the honor was being formed and they were backed into a corner. It yielded a United States Championship victory for Sheamus, but little was actually made of it after that. Once he was traded to Smackdown, his title was given to Kofi Kingston anyway.
Improved Ability in Ring
3 of 5Sheamus is a powerhouse and there is little to actually change from that. However, Sheamus has really helped himself out by being more versatile and doing unexpected things for a big guy. His Brogue Kick is something that isn't done by everybody, but he was a basic powerhouse beyond that. His repeated strikes to an opponent's chest are more of what a brawler would do and is unique to him.
What really impresses me is his ability to fly over the top rope, using his entire body as a battering ram. He also has adopted a new move, which has been called White Noise. That is an over-the-shoulder, back-to-belly piledriver, which was used a few years ago by Finlay, who also had an Irish gimmick. He called it the Celtic Cross, which was the original name for Sheamus and his original finisher, now called The High Cross.
Sharpened Mic Skills
4 of 5It's hard when you have an accent. Some people in the crowd make fun of what you say. Others cannot comprehend certain words. It all can get kind of messy.
While Sheamus still uses his natural accent, he seems more comfortable on the mic. It isn't about how you talk as much as it gets to be about what you say and how you are when you say it. Sheamus is more relaxed and confident when he speaks and that gets through to people.
Belief from Creative Staff
5 of 5Sheamus has worked very hard and has earned the respect of the writing staff. He was just another guy on Smackdown but ended up as the Royal Rumble winner. On a brand with Daniel Bryan as a champion and such strong faces as Big Show and Randy Orton, Sheamus is the one headed to WrestleMania instead.
In the end, it was just perseverance and improvement that got Sheamus to a point in his career where it all can go smoothly now. If Sheamus walks out of WrestleMania as the World Heavyweight Champion, we can know that it wasn't handed to him, but rather that he earned it.
