Mike D'Antoni: 5 Potential Landing Spots for Disgraced Head Coach

Bradlee RossJun 4, 2018

Mike D'Antoni has officially resigned his post as the head coach of New York Knicks, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Now it's time to see exactly where he'll land his next coaching gig.

D'Antoni has proven himself to be a good coach, especially in Phoenix, where he and Steve Nash lit up score boards and won big games in the regular season and playoffs. He'll definitely land somewhere, but the question is where.

Here are five potential landing spots for D'Antoni.

Los Angeles Clippers

1 of 5

The Los Angeles Clippers have been sliding as of late, and if something doesn't turn around, head coach Vinny Del Negro could be out of there a lot earlier than he expected.

Enter Mike D'Antoni.

The Clippers' current roster is set up extremely well. They have a talented point guard in Chris Paul, a few big men who can do the pick-and-roll in Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan and shooters to space the floor like Mo Williams.

Those are the key ingredients to D'Antoni's system, and the Clips have them all.

Portland Trailblazers

2 of 5

The Portland Trailblazers are another team that has taken a downhill turn after a hot start to the season. Head coach Nate McMillan could be out the door soon.

They don't set up as nicely for D'Antoni as the Clippers do, but they have a great big man in LaMarcus Aldridge and a point guard in Raymond Felton who is familiar with D'Antoni's system.

Felton averaged 17 points and nine assists during his time with D'Antoni—by far the best of his career. That alone should be enough to get the Trailblazers looking D'Antoni's way.

Sacramento Kings

3 of 5

The Sacramento Kings are full of young players who would like to run but not to play defense. Sounds like a perfect fit for Mike D'Antoni!

Tyreke Evans is a talented point guard, but I'm not sure if he'd be able to run this system or not. DeMarcus Cousins and J.J. Hickson would flourish in this type of pick-and-roll offense, while Jimmer Fredette, John Salmons and Marcus Thornton could spread the floor.

It might blow up in our faces, but it would be extremely entertaining while doing so.

Toronto Raptors

4 of 5

Another good fit for D'Antoni to revive his career would be in the great land of Canada with the Toronto Raptors.

The Raptors have a solid point guard in Jose Calderon, whose current assist mark of 8.5 per game would easily reach into the double digits under D'Antoni's system.

Leandro Barbosa is also up in Toronto. He proved in his time with Phoenix that he could flourish in D'Antoni's system, winning Sixth Man of the Year one year.

Finally, there is Andrea Bargnani, who just the type of all-around skilled big man that could score a lot of points for this coach.

New Jersey Nets

5 of 5

If D'Antoni wants revenge, the soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets would be the place to go—especially if they can get both Deron Williams and Dwight Howard.

When you add those two with D'Antoni and all of the three-point shooters that the Nets have, you have a team built to run D'Antoni's offense.

In fact, this is probably the best setup for D'Antoni. He'd have a top-notch point guard in Williams, a big man who can run the floor and dominate in Howard and guys to space the floor everywhere.

It's a match made in Heaven. Brooklyn will be D'Antoni's heaven.
