NBA Trade Rumors: Breaking Down New York Knicks' Most Tradable Assets

Kelly ScalettaJun 7, 2018

Last year, the New York Knicks were the team to talk about at the trade deadline. All the chatter was about Carmelo Anthony and where he would go. Eventually, they landed the biggest fish in the sea.

This year, it's another story. There aren't a lot of Knicks on the radar, but there are a few stories out there.

Here are the Knicks who could potentially be moved and what kind of return they might bring.

Toney Douglas

According to ESPN.com, "The Knicks are trying to move Toney Douglas."

Douglas is having a down year, but a lot of that is on him trying to play a position that doesn't come naturally to him. He's a shooting guard being forced to play point guard and he hasn't been doing either very well.

His per-36 minutes scoring is down from 15.6 to 13.2, his assists per-36 is down from 4.5 to 3.9 and his effective field goal percentage is down from .511 to .367.

If someone wants to trade for Douglas, they could probably land a decent deal. He has a reasonable contract at just $1.1 million and has another year left on it.

At only 25 years old, he has room to grow and his numbers should come back up in a more consistent offense.

Amar'e Stoudemire

Amar'e Stoudemire was getting talk for MVP just one year ago. He's now getting some hype as the MOP—the most overpaid player.

I appreciate a player trying to shed 15 pounds and trying to get into playing shape, I'm just not so sure that I like the idea of him waiting until the season is halfway over to do it

His scoring is down 7.6 points per game and his field-goal percentage is down from 19.0 to 14.8.

When you combine that with the fact that he has a massive, uninsured contract, there are Knicks fans who might like the idea of seeing Stoudemire gone.

That being said, I don't see anyone saying, "Yeah, that's what we need, an overweight, overpaid, oft-injured big man with bad knees and an uninsured contract."

In other words, there's not an asset there, which is why you aren't seeing any trade rumors about him.

Carmelo Anthony

According to ESPN.com's Chris Broussard:

"

The Magic would also be interested in a Knicks package of Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler, sources say, should the Knicks make such an offer. The Knicks have discussed the deal internally but have been given no indication that Howard would remain with them long term. That being the case, they have thus far refused the temptation to engage Orlando in trade talks.

"

Carmelo Anthony has been rumored to be asking for a trade. He has since denied those rumors.

That being said, he doesn't have to ask in order to be traded.

His trade value has taken a hit, while Chandler is perceived to be overpaid (an evaluation I disagree with, but the perception is there).

If the Knicks can get a promise from Howard, it's worth considering. However, the question comes down to the commitment from Howard.

The problem becomes the same as what exists in Chicago—no team is going to send their best assets to another for a 25 game rental.
