Knicks Rumors: Why New York Would Be Insane to Deal for Boris Diaw
The New York Knicks would be absolutely insane to make a deal that would send Boris Diaw to them from the Charlotte Bobcats.
The Knicks are struggling right now, and looking for the answer to their woes. It is pure lunacy to think that Diaw is the player that would do the trick.
However, according to the San Antonio Spurs’ point guard Tony Parker, a close personal friend of Diaw, both the Knicks and Parker’s Spurs are interested in acquiring him.
While it seems to make some sense for the Spurs, especially given Diaw’s relationship with Parker, it does not make any for the Knicks.
The Knicks need guys that will come in and make a difference. Diaw could possibly help beef up the second unit, but he really wouldn’t make them much better than they already are.
As a guy who started nearly all of the Bobcats’ games, Diaw didn’t make much of a difference. He averaged 7.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, playing a combination of the power forward and center positions.
The fact that he played center at all at just 6’8” tall just proves how bad the Bobcats are.
Diaw is a role player, but not a guy who will come in and change the face of the Knicks. He’s also a guy who has had some off-the-court issues.
Those issues include conflicts with his head coach and supposedly not playing his hardest when he’s in the game.
No offense to the Knicks, but they are already have plenty of guys with attitude questions and issues like J.R. Smith, Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. They don’t need another guy to come in and potentially contribute to a toxic environment.
The positive that people will see is that Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni knows Diaw well from their time in Phoenix, and that they would get along well. That’s all fine and dandy, but D’Antoni knew Stoudemire well from Phoenix too and that’s not really helping the team right now.
Plus, there is also the issue of Diaw’s contract. He is getting paid $9 million for this season, after which he will be an unrestricted free agent.
There is no way that the Knicks can afford him in a trade. They have nothing to give up that could keep them under the cap while at the same time allowing them to take on his salary.
Well, at least nothing that they’d be willing to give up.
There have been rumors that Diaw wants a buyout from the Bobcats. If that were the case, then he could sign with a team before the playoffs for less money.
That would be the smarter route for the Knicks to hope for. I write “smarter” because it’s smarter than a trade, but acquiring Diaw still isn’t smart overall.
He’s a player that the Knicks don’t need. In fact, he has the potential to make them worse. That’s why they’d be crazy to trade for him.
