Matt Flynn Rumors: Seahawks Must Aggressively Pursue Packers' Backup QB

Richard LangfordJun 5, 2018

The Seattle Seahawks need to start pitching offers to Matt Flynn while other QB-needy teams are wrapped up in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.

The Seahawks wanted to be involved in the Manning sweepstakes, but with reports—like this one by the Denver Post's Mike Kils—telling us that Manning turned down the Seahawks' invitation to visit, the Seahawks need to move on.

After all, there is only going to be one team that scores Manning, and to say it is a longshot for the Seahawks to be that team would be too generous. And that is better than being one of the teams that thinks they have shot only to get denied and left empty handed.

Now the Seahawks are free to pursue other options. And Packers QB Matt Flynn appears to be popping up on their radar.

While discussing that the Seahawks are unlikely to land Peyton Manning, Eric D. Williams of the News Tribune offered up the following insight:

"

But armed with at least $30 million in cap space after the league announced the salary cap for the new league year will be $120.6 million, the Seahawks have other, big-name targets in mind, including Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams, Green Bay backup quarterback Matt Flynn and Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Paul Soliai.

"

The 'Hawks have the need, the cap room and the opportunity to present Flynn with an offer he can't refuse. Other teams are going to be tepid in their pursuit while Manning works his way to a decision. Seattle can go all in.

They can present their plan and promise him the moon. They can make him feel more wanted than any other team.

Aat some point, like almost all free agent choices, this decision is likely to come down to money. But the Seahawks can certainly climb to the top of the line, which would give them the edge if another team pitches a similar or slightly greater offer.
