Manchester United Transfers: 6 Rumours Fans Would Love to Come True This Summer
Manchester City now sit at the top of the table, a lone point ahead of noisy neighbors Manchester City, after they won against West Brom, while their rivals slipped up at Swansea and lost 1-0.
Although the United squad is working cohesively, a few marquee signings are definitely needed if United want to seek European glory.
A recent poll on Bleacher Report highlighted that an overwhelming majority of United fans seek to sign a creative midfielder. Other reinforcements, however, might also be necessary.
Here are six transfer rumours United fans would love to see come true.
6. Luka Modric
1 of 6The Luka Modric transfer saga was one of the hottest last summer.
Chelsea were keen on getting the Croatian maestro at all costs, but Tottenham Hotspur Chairman, Daniel Levy, staunchly refused a £40m offer.
And now, according to the Daily Star, rumors have emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to swoop in and try to sign the Spurs' dynamic playmaker.
The uncertainty regarding the departure of Tottenham's manager Harry Redknapp certainly does not help Daniel Levy's efforts to keep him at White Hart Lane.
If United manage to get hold of Modric, he would certainly add a level of panache that has gone missing from the United midfield.
But Chelsea would probably be the likeliest of destinations for the Croat, as they would be willing to pay the extravagant fees that Tottenham would demand.
5. Wesley Sneijder
2 of 6From one protracted transfer saga to another.
Last summer, we were bombarded with what seemed to be an endless series of reports— some corroborating, some denying—the move of Inter Milan and Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
Again, this past February, the Daily Mail reported that Sneijder was in favor of a move to Old Trafford.
He would be a welcome addition to the United roster and provide a world-class presence in the heart of the United midfield, which sometimes looks lackluster at best.
However, his age and his salary requirements might prove to be too much of a barrier, and Sir Alex might be reluctant to sign him.
4. Eden Hazard
3 of 6Eden Hazard has been linked to all of the top clubs possible.
Zinedine Zidane suggested him to Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid and Arsenal are also in pursuit—but Tottenham seem to be the favorites.
However, there are also a fair share of rumors linking the winger to Manchester United.
Unlike the two playmakers we have already discussed, Hazard is only 21 years old, and he would align perfectly with Sir Alex's philosophy of developing young players.
Sir Alex is perfectly capable of developing him into the next Cristiano Ronaldo; his dribbling and passing are remarkable.
But given the number of suitors that are after Hazard, there is a slim chance of United landing him.
3. Christian Eriksen
4 of 6Ever since Christian Eriksen burst onto the grand stage, he has attracted a number of suitors.
Manchester United is one of them.
Eriksen is only 20 and has phenomenal technical abilities. Recently, against Manchester United, he was quite impressive.
He has been equally impressive for Denmark, and he has already been hailed as the new "Michael Laudrup."
He was bestowed with the Dutch Football Talent of the Year for 2011 by none other than the legendary Johann Cruyff.
Recognized as being on-par with phenomenal talents such as Mario Götze and Juan Mata, he would certainly be a fantastic addition to United.
Furthermore, he has also aimed quite laudatory words toward Ferguson, citing him as "one of the game's greatest managers."
2. Nicolás Gaitán
5 of 6Nicolás Gaitán was brought in by Benfica to fill the void left by the departure of Angel Di Maria to Real Madrid.
This alone speaks volumes about his talent.
He had a dazzling debut campaign, and he was named the Portuguese League Breakthrough Player of the Year.
This season, he has the most number of assists in the UEFA Champions League having registered five of those. In October 2011, he was offered a new five-year-contract which has a £38.5 million release clause.
There have been rumors indicating of a potential move for the Argentine to Manchester United.
Goal.com has even gone as far as to say that a verbal pact for the wideman has already been reached ahead of the summer transfer window.
Gaitan is speedy with an excellent first touch and vision, akin to creative players like David Silva and Juan Mata.
His versatility would also provide Sir Alex the opportunity to deploy him in an attacking midfield role, or to have him take over the winger role when others like Nani and Ashley Young are inconsistent.
However, given the enormous release cause, coupled with the fact that Manchester City also seem to be in hot pursuit, this transfer might be unlikely.
1. Jordi Alba
6 of 6Let's face it: once heralded as one of the greatest left backs in the world, Patrice Evra has turned into a liability.
Jordi Alba has been in superb form for Valencia, and he has been equally impressive for Spain contributing two assists in three games.
He would be a world-class replacement for the aging Evra, and Manchester United have been keen on signing him. He contributes well in attack and matches it with defensive solidity of the highest degree.
Particularly strong are his ball interceptions.
However, given the fact that Alba himself has reiterated time and again about the improbability of his move to United, he would be a signing United fans would love.
