2012 NFL Trade Rumors: Getting Tebow Will Not Solve All of Jacksonville's Issues

David LevinMar 12, 2012

With speculation swirling that Peyton Manning will call Denver his new home, the rumor is that Tim Tebow will have a new home in 2012.

One of his stops could be his hometown of Jacksonville.

The former Florida Gator, National Champion, Heisman Trophy winner and first-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos was a savior of sorts after engineering comebacks and an improbable playoff run last year, and remains a hot topic of conversation in Jacksonville.

In the 2010 NFL draft, the Jaguars bypassed the hometown hero to select Tyson Alualu, a solid but not spectacular defensive tackle. The Jaguars drafted Blaine Gabbert last season. That project is still a work in progress.

Team owner Shahid Khan stated last month that if he had owned the team in 2010 and had been involved in the draft, he certainly would have tried to draft Tebow, citing the fact he was one of the better athletes in the draft.

Tebow's appearance in Jacksonville means more than just a chance to win. He is a marketing dynamo. He would sell out EverBank Field consistently and would put the small-market Jaguars on the map.

However, there are also some negatives to signing or trading for such a uber-popular player. He is such a fan favorite in Denver, there could be a backlash from having to unload such a superstar. It would appear that Tebow and Manning could not exist on the same team with the same agent, Tom Condon. Plus, the Huffington Post reports that Manning still has Miami and Arizona on his radar.

Manning and potential first-round draft choice of the Colts, Andrew Luck, could not coexist with each other.

While Tebow is a "thinking" man's quarterback and super athlete, he still needs work on his mechanics and motion and delivery. Is first-year head coach Mike Mularkey going to work with two quarterbacks who need significant upgrades in their skill sets?

Gabbert was the last rated starting quarterback in the NFL last season and having Tebow on the roster does not guarantee success. While he was a hit in Denver for improvisation and his running ability that led him to 660 yards rushing, his presence may not have been the deciding factor in wins for the Jaguars.

Denver's receiving was better than the Jaguars. Demaryius Thomas became a star this season. Eric Decker emerged as a reliable second option. The Jaguars were working with Mike Thomas and street free agents at the end of the season.

While Tebow would serve a purpose, you have to ask, "What happens if he falters? Do you go back to Gabbert?"

For now, Tebow wears orange and blue. In the next few days, he could be wearing another color. The Broncos and the Jaguars have to decide whether or not his new colors should be black and teal and what that truly means to the team, the cities involved and Tebow himself.

Sometimes, coming home is not the best answer.
