NBA Rumors: Boston Celtics Right to Lock Up Rajon Rondo
The Boston Celtics will most likely head into the second half of the season with Rajon Rondo, and that's the smartest thing they have done all season.
Back on March 1st, ESPN's Chris Forsberg ran a report that issued president of basketball operations Danny Ainge was not actively shopping Rondo as rumors hinted. He went so far as to state the following.
"He's our best player, he's the most important part of our future. There's no way we're actively trying to trade Rondo. That make no sense, no logical sense.
"
We now get a report from CBS Sports' Ken Berger that echoes that claim and issues the Celtics are putting a hefty price tag on Rondo going into next week's deadline.
"Rival executives believe Celtics president Danny Ainge would have to be blown away by an offer to move Rondo.
"
Many have trumpeted Rajon Rondo as the best and most tradable asset the Celtics have, and I have to admit I was one of them.
His salary and demeanor on the court make him a blessing for any team that needs a point guard to build around.
What's become immensely clear in the past couple weeks is that Rondo is the Celtics' best player. You don't simply rebuild by casting off the best player on the team. If you do, the deal better knock your socks off, and the socks of anyone still standing in the room.
Ainge may have flirted with getting what he could for Rondo, but that all had to be extinguished after a remarkable game against the Knicks where Rondo scored 18 points, had 20 assists and 17 rebounds.
The Celtics simply cannot live without his production, nor the way that he plays the game. The man hates to lose, and that is indispensable in a city that has grown accustomed to successful ballclubs.
Rajon Rondo is going nowhere, and that will have to be the best part of an otherwise mediocre season.
