2012 NFL Mock Draft: Rams-Redskins Draft Trade Is a Win-Win Scenario

Zach KruseMar 10, 2012

There's no way around it. The Washington Redskins paid a king's ransom Friday night to move up from the No. 6 overall slot in the 2012 NFL draft to No. 2.

But here's the kicker: Washington's move was completely worth it. And both teams, including the St. Louis Rams, became big winners with the completion of this trade.

First, the parameters of the deal.

According to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, the Redskins sent the No. 6 overall pick, first-round picks in 2013 and 2014 and a second-round pick in 2012 for the right to draft second in April. No team has ever paid more to move up in a draft in NFL history.

If you are the Redskins, however, no price could have been too high.

Coach Mike Shanahan and the Redskins will get the franchise quarterback they've so desperately needed for so many years.

Depending on which way the Indianapolis Colts go with No. 1 overall selection, Washington should have the chance to draft either Baylor's Robert Griffin III or Stanford's Andrew Luck with the second overall pick.

The Rams, who never planned on staying at No. 2, now get the chance to use their immense draft capital in coming years to rebuild a franchise that needs good picks at several different positions. Moving back just four spots in the first round allows the Rams to get an elite-level prospect, too.

While it rarely happens when two teams make a trade of this proportion, both sides are clear winners here.
