NBA Trade Rumors: Dallas Mavericks Smart to Stand Pat for Stretch Run

Michael DixonJun 2, 2018

It's safe to say that Mark Cuban does not want his team's players to get swept up in the rumor mill that surrounds the NBA trade deadline. For Mavericks fans, it has to be good to know that the owner is taking the right moves for the team. That is precisely what Cuban is doing.

Talking about potential trades, Cuban mixed no words when talking to Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News

"

"We're not calling anybody,'' Cuban said before Tuesday's game against New York. "I told Donnie (Nelson) to take calls, but we're not making any calls. There you have it.''

Cuban added:

"

"I don't care about our record as long as we make the playoffs. So you know you're going to lose games that you otherwise might have won. You hope the schedule balances where we get guys later in the season that are in their ninth game in 12 nights. Hopefully it will help us as well.''

"

The owner is absolutely right. The Mavericks are eerily similar to what we saw from the 2010 Celtics. Getting to the playoffs is what's important. Things like record and even home-court advantage are secondary when compared to just getting to the playoffs and doing damage.

Once you're in the playoffs, the only thing that not having home court means is that you have to win one road game. The Mavericks certainly showed that they were capable of that last year with a 7-3 road record in the postseason.

The only concern for a veteran team such as this one is getting there. Make the playoffs, and anything can happen. Currently, the Mavericks are firmly in the postseason and actually aren't far from being in the top four in the Western Conference that is still wide open outside of Oklahoma City.

There is no need to break a group up that just won the NBA title a year ago. The Mavericks are just fine as things are. They will outperform their seed in the Western Conference playoffs, and if OKC does slip up, Dallas is on the top of the list for favorites in the conference.

You never know what offers some other team might come up with, so there's no need to not answer any offers. But the Mavericks absolutely don't need to go deal chasing. As reigning champions easily in the playoffs with cap space, there is no closing window that needs to be dealt with.
