WrestleMania 28: Less Talking Is Better for The Rock Heading into WrestleMania

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

When The Rock made his return to WWE last week, fans were excited because they were going to hear him just riff on John Cena until WrestleMania arrived. Things didn't work out as planned, but redemption came last night thanks to a decreased amount of talking.

Sure, Rock was given ample time during the show to say his piece and give Cena a modified history lesson on the city of Boston. But when it came time to step in the ring and go face to face with his WrestleMania adversary, he didn't have to say much.

Instead of trying to pepper the audience with catchphrases and Twitter trends, he decided to tell Cena exactly why WrestleMania would be the end of the Cenation reign in WWE.

Rock just had to say that Cena was afraid. He is afraid of losing all that he has spent the last decade building, his cushy spot as The Man in WWE could be gone in one fell swoop if he doesn't win at WrestleMania.

It was an atypical Rock promo, yet it did exactly what it needed to do. The only problem with this whole thing is the way that Cena sold it, or didn't even try to sell it. He was back to his old, annoying self on this show, trying to crack jokes and make friends with the audience.

Rock didn't want to be friends with anyone. He decided to grit his teeth and tell the world why Cena needed to win this match.

They always say that less is more, and that theory was proven so true on Monday night.

It is great to have Rock come back, crack jokes and entertain the audience. He could do that for 52 weeks every year with no real complaints from anyone. But to sell a match, Rock had to get people invested. He had to do everything he could to make people understand why this match is so important to himself, Cena and WWE. It is all about ego and proving who the better man is.

You don't need a gimmick or jokes to sell that match. All you need is a few words and the right intensity from a great performer. Rock held up his end of the bargain on Monday night. It wasn't quite on par with what we saw from these two last week, but it was very good.

Hopefully, they can follow it up well next week, though with both Cena and Rock locked into "concerts," you can color me skeptical that it will do anything to help the build.
