Washington Redskins Will Remain Prudent in Potential Trade Up for Robert Griffin

Shae CroninMar 4, 2012

The prayers for economical responsibility amongst the Redskins front office regarding a potential trade to help land Robert Griffin III have seemingly been answered.

According to the very knowledgeable and credible Rich Tandler, the Redskins are unwilling to part with their 2012 second-round draft pick in any potential deal to trade up to the No. 2 spot. And according to Rams beat writer Jim Thomas, St. Louis views that as a deal breaker.

Tandler also mentions Thomas’s opinion that the Browns and Redskins are the most serious contenders to trade-up into the Rams No. 2 spot, but Thomas acknowledges that “Washington continues to rate as the front-runner.”

Equipped with two first-rounders in this April’s draft, the Browns are reportedly unwilling to part with their other first-rounder (No. 22), that according to Tandler.

As hot of a commodity as Griffin is, it’s reassuring to know that Mike Shanahan and the Redskins front office aren’t necessarily willing to bet the farm on one guy. Understanding that this Washington franchise is in need of more than just a savior signal-caller, Shanahan appears committed to remaining thrifty in any deals moving forward.

Although the Rams have the right to mark-up their No. 2 pick—and the justification do so after Griffin’s Combine performance—they may be forced to accept a reasonable offer rather than attempting to pull some form of highway robbery.

Not to be mistaken as a dead-end, this is good news for Redskins fans. While it appears that drafting Griffin is a majority-supported decision for the franchise, showing budgetary responsibility illustrates that Shanahan and the staff are committed to success beyond the head coach’s five-year deal.
