Liverpool vs. Arsenal: Gunners Show Remarkable Resiliency with Win at Anfield

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Arsenal has had every chance to quit and give up on the 2011-12 season, but their resiliency and will to keep fighting has helped them climb from far down in the Premier League table back into the top four.

After giving up a penalty kick and allowing an own goal to start the first half of Saturday's match against Liverpool, Arsenal kept fighting and were rewarded with a thrilling victory thanks to Robin Van Persie's two goals, the last of which came in stoppage time.

Now Arsenal have won back-to-back league games against Tottenham (5-2) and Liverpool (2-1) to give them a three-point cushion in fourth place.

Arsenal don't get down on themselves when matches don't begin well, and they don't fold when opposing clubs take an early lead and seize the momentum quickly.

Manager Arsene Wenger, who many people, myself included, wanted to sack during this season, has shown once again why he's arguably the top manager in world football. His positive attitude and ability to convince his team that they will win matches if they play their style of football has saved the club's season.

The Gunners got off to the worst start in club history this season, and their chances of winning a trophy, finishing in the top four of the table and keeping Van Persie past the summer all looked very slim.

After losing 8-2 at Old Trafford in August against rival Manchester United, supporters and media members were fearing that this season would be a complete disaster for the club. However, after many difficult times throughout the season, including difficult losses to top sides and disappointing league cup matches, Arsenal has fought through it all and look ready to go on a brilliant run of good form as the season enters its most important stage.

Give the players tremendous credit for their remarkable resiliency this season. To be able to turn your season around when it looked like the club would be lucky to finish fifth or six is an amazing accomplishment.

Not many clubs in Europe would have survived a horrific start to the season, combined with losing three stars in the summer transfer window, and still find themselves in the top four come early March.

Arsenal might not be the fourth-best team in England, but their spectacular resiliency and refusal to quit has paid off, as they are playing some fantastic football right now.

The Gunners have proven they can come back from early deficits and difficult starts, which has given them the confidence that they can turn any match into a positive result.

Even if Arsenal finishes in the top four this season and secures Champions League football for next year, the most impressive aspect of this season will have been their resiliency.
