Daily Overreaction: Would Peyton Manning Fix All New York Jets Problems?
Miami Dolphins fans may have had a billboard installed in Miami begging Peyton Manning to take his talents to South Beach, but billboards are so '70s. Leave it to a fan of the New York Jets to one-up them with a new-fangled "website."
A petition was started online at ManningToJets.com proclaiming that all the problems that kept the Jets out of the playoffs in 2011 would instantly be solved by signing Peyton.
"Although the 2011 New York Jets put together an awesome roster of players, they not only underachieved week in and week out, they were shut out of the playoffs as well. Two of the biggest failures that resulted in such underwhelming performances were:
- Lack of leadership in the locker room as well as on the field; and
- Quality of play from the quarterback position.
Both of these problems can be solved with a single personnel change:
Signing Peyton Manning As The Starting Quarterback For The New York Jets.

Overreaction: Manning solves all of the Jets' problems!
It's not so crazy to imagine Peyton Manning in a Jets uniform. What is crazy is thinking that's the only thing it's going to take to fix the Jets problems.
The Jets are wise to do whatever gives the team the best chance to win, and they have said as much every time they are asked about their quarterback situation and the availability of the future Hall of Famer. It'd be foolish to think they have a better chance to win with Mark Sanchez right now than a healthy Peyton Manning.
That brings me to my next point. How do we even know he'll be 100 percent? And if he is, will he be able to withstand the inevitable hits he'll take? Because if last year is any indication, there'll be plenty of hits to go around for the Jets quarterback, whoever that may be. Manning's pocket presence is miles ahead of Sanchez, but the Jets pocket is miles behind anything he ever had in Indy.
And that leads to the gigantic question marks on the offensive line. Even if the Jets answer the questions at quarterback and on the offensive line, two more question marks remain at outside linebacker and wide receiver, where the team is even considering bringing back 2011 castoff Braylon Edwards.
There's little doubt that Manning is a better alternative than Sanchez at quarterback, and no one with the Jets seems too inclined to say otherwise (and if they did, they've been running backpedal drills like they're at the scouting combine ever since).
What the Jets must be careful of, though, is putting themselves in an even worse situation in 2013 than the one they face this year. Restructuring the necessary deals to afford Manning would create the potential for just such a situation.
Thus, while Manning would clear up one of the Jets' biggest issues—talent at quarterback—it would be far from the only move necessary to put the Jets back in contention, and if the move doesn't put the Jets back in contention, it could create far more problems than it's worth.
