Reviewing the Dallas Cowboys' 5 Biggest Scouting Combine Takeaways
Now that the NFL scouting combine is finished, it is time for a quick review of what the Dallas Cowboys were able to accomplish during their time in Indy. Team owner Jerry Jones made headlines, as always, when he said that the Cowboys were talented enough to win a Super Bowl.
He was also lambasted by Dallas media, as one writer called him “delusional” and said that he has “no grip on reality.” Yep, it’s rough in Dallas these days. The fans are hungry for a Super Bowl and seeing the Giants win another one may soon send them over the edge.
But the feeling of dire most fans have once a season is over quickly turns to blind optimism and idealism once the offseason starts. Cowboys fans, meet your desperate reality.
Before we travel down that road of veracity, let’s explore the idealistic nature of the combine with a few good takeaways for the Dallas Cowboys.
Offensive Linemen Play
1 of 5According to a report on ESPNDallas.com, a few offensive linemen stood out with their combine play. The Cowboys are looking to upgrade in that area, but I believe they can do so without reaching in the first round.
Best choice for Dallas is to go after a tackle or a guard in the later rounds, but there were a few standouts that are well within their reach at No. 14.
Cordy Glenn graded high and is all over the news for having a great combine. Just check Google news results. He has caught the attention of the Cowboys front office and Dallas could make a move on him.
The Cowboys need help on the offensive line, but drafting him over Kirkpatrick, Barron or Jenkins would be a mistake. The secondary needs an upgrade over the offensive line.
Cowboys Draft Strategy
2 of 5The Cowboys may be shifting their strategy toward improving the offensive line over the secondary in the first round. Jones has already said that finding a top pass-rusher is a priority, so he feels that he can find good talent in the later rounds to upgrade their defensive backfield.
He has also taken note of the Giants pass-rush and their recent Super Bowl run. He believes that if Dallas can add another ferocious quarterback eater to pair with linebacker DeMarcus Ware, the team can make a serious run at a title.
I think it’s more complicated than that, but Jerry isn’t that far away. I just hope he doesn’t reach, which he usually doesn’t, trying to find gold with one player in the first round.
Melvin Ingram, South Carolina
3 of 5I detail him because some mocks and analysts have him going to the Cowboys after his combine workout. He's also highly regarded due to Jones' comments about the team needing a pass-rush.
Ingram ran a 4.66 in th 40-yard dash and benched pressed his arms off as well. He lifted 225 pounds 28 times. Some are comparing him to the Denver Broncos Von Miller, and if that is the case, Dallas needs to draft him.
I may be a little of Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde, yes I said Ms. Hyde, with this article, but sometimes you have to draft the best player available. If Ingram is there and he's Von Miller, you draft Ingram. Get it?
Jeff Allen, OT-OG
4 of 5Another player I chose to single out is Jeff Allen. He has great character, a plus for Dallas, strong build and has variety on the line. I do not believe he is worth a pick at 14, but he still gets high marks from me.
He benched well and ran just over five seconds in the 40-yard dash. He showed fantastic footwork, but most of all he can play guard and tackle on both sides. Dallas needs a player with diversity in his skills for depth purposes. I like Jeff, and hopefully, Dallas will take a second look at him.
James-Michael Johnson, ILB
5 of 5Johnson made waves at the combine for his solid performance and athletic prowess. He looked “complete,” according to one report. I think that he would be a good fit at inside linebacker for Dallas, but he’s the type of player that needs the right scheme to thrive.
He’s a middle-to-low round draft and will need a little time to develop. He may fit best in a 4-3 scheme, but because Dallas likes to get aggressive, he should fit in well.
