WWE: Despite Storyline Justification, John Cena Shaming Eve Was a Bad Idea
The start to last week's RAW was an unusual one. Instead of acknowledging CM Punk retaining the WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber or Chris Jericho being eliminated only from not being able to continue, the focus was on John Cena. Much like many of the RAWs lately, the end of the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view was about Cena in his Ambulance Match against Kane. Cena's victory at Elimination Chamber was the last thing seen that night. It only seems fitting that something Cena related would lead off last week's RAW.
The first actual faces to be seen last Monday night were three Divas. Imagine that. That's because it was Eve talking to the two Bella Twins. Despite Nikki and Brie being known as heels themselves, they seemed a heck of a lot nicer than Eve, who spoke to begin the night and she officially turned herself heel.

In Eve's words, the former Divas Champion proclaimed that she was using Zack Ryder to garner attention. It is that kind of motive that just seems unusual and confusing to many people. How, exactly, did having Zack Ryder fall in love with her make Eve anything more in the company than what she already was? Did exposure from Ryder's YouTube show, which is losing support and views as weeks go on, really launch Eve's stock in the company?
The only thing Eve seemed to get out of the entire situation was exposure garnered by Cena, not Ryder. It was her kiss with Cena, which we watched along with Ryder, that made The Woo Woo Woo Kid's Valentine's Day a less than stellar one. Eve then told the Bella Twins of her super secret plan, which was also being broadcast on live television. Her plan was to use John Cena to get what she wanted, but Cena was standing behind her the entire time.
Cena would then come to the ring and Eve would follow him, wanting to explain herself. Instead, Eve became subject to Cena's tongue lashings. These were different tongue lashings that Cena's actual tongue did to the inside of Eve's mouth the week before. It would be easily the most damaging thing that Cena has ever said about a female inside a WWE ring.
Cena would cut off Eve's explanation and explain things to the Minneapolis crowd. Here's how Cena would begin:
"Eve, here, has apparently been sipping the skank juice... and her plan is to use her (pauses) assets to further her career."
I don't know if I have ever heard of the term "skank juice," but if that is a true thing, I might know some women who have swigged a bottle or two of it. Regardless, it was an unexpected rib from a relatively genuine and generous guy in John Cena.
Eve's response would be that she has been a friend of Cena's for years now, which seemed to anger Cena that much more. Cena would explain that it was Eve's motives that would cost his friendship with Zack Ryder. To be specific, Cena stated that he "lost a broski for a 'hoeski'."
It wouldn't take long for the WWE Universe to pick up on the latest word to describe Eve. Not only was "hoeski" chanted inside the Target Center, but the word became the number one Twitter trend worldwide at one point last Monday night. That's right, the company promoting their Be A Star program, who features Eve as one of the main spokespeople from WWE, is promoting the name calling and worldwide embarrassment of a woman.
More importantly, their poster child with the All-American attitude and chiseled good looks (as well as a Rise Above Hate t-shirt with a Be A Star logo on the sleeve) stood in a ring and halted the opening segment of a show just to promote the chanting of the word "hoeski".
Cena couldn't resist taking a stab at The Rock either, his opponent in a few weeks at WrestleMania. Centa told Eve to try and latch on to The People's Champion. The following was Cena's reasoning for Eve to pair with The Rock:
"Because you're completely disingenuous, total ego maniacally self-centered, and you will use anybody to get anything that you want. You guys are perfect for each other. You're both scandalous bitches."
Cena would then look into the camera and mouth the words "I'm back" and start laughing. More publicity in the wrestling world was made of Cena's second promo from last week, which was directed exclusively to The Rock.
For a final act, Cena would deliver one more zinger to Eve. When Eve fell to her knees, Cena tried to help her up. Eve tired to kiss Cena feverishly, but to no avail. Referees came down to the ring to separate the two. As Cena was leaving, he would turn and say this:
"For your information, I am disease free. I'd like to keep it that way."
Cena would then drop his microphone on the ground and walk to the back, effectively ending the segment. What Cena had effectively done, however, was be exactly what anti-Cena fans have wanted him to be for years. He even threw in a reference to Eve again during his promo on The Rock, calling the Diva a "skank-opotamus".
I can understand that it seems that maybe John Cena is, in fact, "embracing the hate". However, when Cena is your most marketable asset and is known for his good spirited comments, something like this completely wipes the credibility away. You can take the last word in the phrase "Hustle, Loyalty, Respect" and just chuck it out the window. To be completely frank, this seems to be the first case of WWE taking the John Cena franchise and turning back on whatever they have built him to stand for over the last decade.
