WWE/TNA: Top 5 'Fantasy Booking' Scenarios That Won't Happen
I know, I know.
Never say never. Anything can and will happen in this business. Expect the unexpected at all times! That is all well and good, but I tend to stick to numbers, figures, facts and reality.
Just as there is in any sport, the wrestling business has always spurned discussion outside the box and left fans wondering "What if?" Today, I explain the top five scenarios fans may think they want but don't.
5. TNA Competing with WWE
1 of 5I didn't even want to mention TNA; however, they are still trying to re-create WCW, so I decided to give them a quick mention.
Their "big" ratings for Impact are nearly one third of WWE Raw's. Including SmackDown on Friday nights, they are half way to them.
TNA runs a few house shows a month, drawing anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand. WWE runs tons of house shows a week, drawing a few thousand to 10,000 (or more).
WWE has huge hits of expensive DVDs, shirts, headbands, hats and other merchandise sellers. TNA has a "brown bag" special with a couple movies, shirts and programs all for $20.
TNA (outside of a few rare road tapings) tapes its shows in a sound stage with 1,000 non-paying tourists in Orlando. WWE tapes all around the world in large arenas with actual paying fans.
The most purchased WWE event of all time was WrestleMania 23 at over 1.2 million buys. The largest TNA show was over 60,000 in 2006. Now? Reports have them at 8,000 buys a month.
Do I even need to discuss TNA moving to Monday nights in 2010 to go against Raw? Within a month, their ratings were cut in half. A month later, they ran back to Thursday.
Assuming DixieLand is still in business, come to me in another five years or so if you want to compare the two companies. Until then, please don't.
4. Re-Writing History
2 of 5I am flexible on this issue, but I still do not like it.
You can't go back in time and change things. Unless a time machine was invented over the past hour or so, it is not worth the time to even think about.
My favorite example is the Invasion story from 2001. Personally, I loved it. However, that doesn't stop fans from thinking otherwise.
Forget about money, contracts, logic and changing people's minds!
Let's bring in Sting, Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and countless others! Also, let's pretend Triple H was never injured and just explode the roster to over 100 wrestlers!
Yeah, that sounds like fun. Except none of it was a reality...
3. What If Matches?
3 of 5Andre the Giant vs. Big Show!
Bret Hart vs. Kurt Angle!
Mr. Perfect vs. Dolph Ziggler!
Yeah, wouldn't those matches be cool?
I am sure they would, but again it is all a fantasy. You're just kidding yourself if you're pretending that the matches would go off perfectly. Dreaming of a brilliant 30 minute classic is just ridiculous.
What if Bret Hart broke his ankle in the opening minute? What if the crowd was quiet throughout the match? What if they "botched" move after move and had an off night?
What if? What if? What if?
2. Undertaker Losing at WrestleMania
4 of 5Kane would beat him in 2004. Randy Orton would defeat the legend in 2005. Batista would retain his title over Undertaker in 2007. Edge would beat him in 2008. Shawn Michaels would end the streak.
Now, it is Triple H's turn! Surely, he will win at WrestleMania XXVIII.
Or not.
It is the same thing every year. Somebody will try to "boldly" predict Undertaker losing at Mania, only to be hiding in the corner the moment the match ends. Rest assured, the very next day, new fans are already lining up to predict his loss at the following event.
Same thing. Every year. It is "fantasy booking" at its finest folks...
Undertaker will win at WrestleMania and extend his undefeated streak to 20-0.
1. John Cena Heel Turn
5 of 5I almost yawned just typing that headline out...
Cena would turn in 2006 to join ECW. Then he would turn on HBK in 2007. After that, he was going to be a heel against Batista. In 2009, he was going to be "bad" against DX.
In 2010, it was the Nexus story line. Surely, he had to join the group and fight Orton, right? In 2011, it was the same song and dance with The Rock. After that, it was Kane. Then Zack Ryder!
We are back to him turning on Rocky...the never ending cycle of trying to predict such a move. Excuse me while I continue to live in the "real world."
This entire thing makes zero sense to me. Fans want him to turn heel, so they can cheer him again? Is that it? Some fans can't like a face! No, only heels are "cool."
Yeah, but the second somebody turns, it is awesome to cheer them on. That seems logical...
Cena is the top man in the business and has been for over five years now. That isn't an opinion. It is a fact. Once again, I highly suggest everybody watch the video I posted here, especially at the 1:07 mark.
If you still want to tell me how Cena will turn heel for the 56,749th, I will be right here...
