Miami Dolphins: Power Ranking the Top QB Options for the Franchise
The Miami Dolphins have an extremely talented team, but there remain questions at the quarterback position. Ever since Dan Marino faded off into the sunset, it has haunted this franchise and has prevented it from getting to where it wants to go.
Up until players are either released from their current team or the NFL draft arrives, the talk down in South Beach will be about what the Dolphins do at quarterback. There remain several options for Miami as they can add anyone from a future Hall of Famer to a rookie with a ton of potential.
Here are the options the Dolphins have in order from worst to the best possible scenario.
5. Vince Young
1 of 5Yeah, you read that right.
Vince Young is a free agent and isn't expected to return to the Eagles. If the Dolphins strikeout on the other four quarterbacks on this list, the 28-year-old quarterback may be worth a look. It seems like he got his life back on track, and in limited action, he did show a few bright spots in his play.
Sure, he threw a lot of interceptions, but remember he had very little practice time with this team during the lockout, and didn't get many reps with Michael Vick on the team. He's still a young quarterback who could make plays and could possibly develop into something better.
At the very least, he'll be a reliable backup and would come at a cheap price since he hasn't shown much the last two seasons. I'm not saying he's going to save the Dolphins, or even become a starter, but he is worth looking at and considering.
4. Matt Flynn
2 of 5Matt Flynn's name is buzzing in South Florida as many believe he could be the next franchise quarterback this team has been missing. He's coming from a great organization and has been under Aaron Rodgers' wing the last few years. His offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is now the Dolphins head coach as well, which is a huge advantage he has over everyone else.
But just how much do we know about Flynn before Miami is comfortable enough to make him a franchise quarterback? Sure, he absolutely carved up the Detroit Lions last year, but that was against a defense that was ranked 23rd in passing yards and 22nd in rushing yards allowed.
He doesn't have great arm strength, but is accurate with his throws. Miami just has to be hesitant before pulling the trigger because the last few backup quarterbacks that were supposed to be great haven't exactly worked out. (Kevin Kolb and Matt Cassel.)
Flynn has the makeup of a franchise quarterback, but bringing him aboard does have its risks.
3. Matt Moore
3 of 5While everybody is asking which quarterback the Dolphins should bring in, maybe the guy is currently on the roster in Matt Moore. He really played well his first season in Miami by completing 60 percent of his passes and throwing for 16 touchdowns.
He is also a great scrambler and can pick up yards with his feet when he has to. He isn't afraid to take chances with the football and has complete trust in his wide receivers to make a play. It was only his fourth season in the NFL last year, and if he's able to build upon last season, there's no reason to believe he can't become a quality starter in this league.
I would, however, like to see how he performs on a winning team and when the expectations are high. He hasn't yet had to fight for his playoff life and hasn't had to face much pressure. It's easy to play well when nobody expects much from you, it's the great quarterbacks that step up and contribute when the postseason is on the line.
Moore is under contract this season, and you better believe he will provide solid competition for whomever the Dolphins possibly decide to bring in.
2. Peyton Manning (If He's Healthy)
4 of 5There are several questions that need answers before any team considers adding Manning to their roster. He's coming off of four neck surgeries, but if he's healthy, I guarantee he'll be better than majority of the quarterbacks in the league. Manning at even 75 percent is better than half the league and all of the free agents out there.
Sure, you could say he's getting older and may not be the same quarterback he used to be, but in 2010 he threw for 4,700 yards and 33 touchdowns. That was only a year ago; if he's healthy, the production isn't going to fall off that much. You also have to remember that this was the first injury and the first time he ever missed a game in his career.
Although with that said, he is getting older, and although the production should still be there, he may not want to play more than two or three more seasons. That's the only reason he is No. 2 on this list and not No. 1.
The reason he's higher than everybody else is because adding him would instantly make the Dolphins Super Bowl contenders. Indianapolis never had a running game and has aging play-makers around him, and he was still able to lead them deep into the playoffs.
With Brandon Marshall, Reggie Bush and decent complement receivers, Manning would have much more to work with and could give Miami a bang for their buck. This is no way a long-term move, but a Super Bowl victory would really be worth it.
1. Robert Griffin
5 of 5This has to be the best option for the Dolphins. Sure, Griffin has yet to step foot on a NFL field, but the potential oozes out of his body. We saw what Cam Newton did last year with the Carolina Panthers, well; this kid is more complete coming out of Baylor.
His arm strength is ridiculous; he throws the ball extremely accurate, has a very high IQ and of course can absolutely kill you with his feet. He's not your average dual-threat quarterback as he can throw the ball with the best of them and is somebody who could come in and start from day one.
His athleticism and exciting play would also help fill Sun Life Stadium as the support has really begun to die down a bit over the years.
Getting him though would take a possible trade with the St. Louis Rams on draft day, but it's a team that is listening to trade offers. Miami should do whatever it takes to put it in position to pick up this young quarterback.
He's extremely gifted and is younger than any of the other quarterbacks on this list, which makes him more valuable than Manning and the best option out there for Miami.
