UFC on FOX 4: 10 Fights We Want to See in Los Angeles
The fourth UFC card on FOX has just been set in California, but no fights have been made as of yet. While different matches could be made based off of events unaired, including UFC 144 which takes place this Saturday, it's always fun to imagine.
Some of these fights include Californians who could bring fans to the fights while others would do just as well anywhere in the world.
Each fight pits different styles against each other and carries varying implications for the fighters involved, but all of them would do well on TV. Whether it would be a main event or the first televised fight, these are 10 bouts worth seeing on the UFC on FOX 4 card in August.
Stefan Struve vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
1 of 10Both Gabriel Gonzaga and Stefan Struve are accomplished grapplers who love striking over submissions.
Gonzaga was able to knock out Mirko Cro Cop with a head kick at UFC 70 and afterwards kept his fights standing. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills he had used to dominate fights for most of his career went away and average kickboxing skills took their place.
Struve has the same problem as he tries to land uppercuts and hooks on his opponents even though 15 of his victories are by submission.
Fans will get to see a striking contest or brilliant grappling no matter how it goes, and while it would be great to see Gonzaga and Struve return to their roots, neither show would disappoint.
Tyson Griffin vs. Leonard Garcia
2 of 10This is a fight where geography and excitement take place over records.
Tyson Griffin is from Sacramento and holds a 1-3 record in his last four fights.
Leonard Garcia has the same on his resume.
Both are known for winning fight of the night with both men holding claim to it four times in their career. Griffin and Garcia are hard to finish and though it is possible to stop them, foes have been hard-pressed to do it.
A win wouldn't guarantee either fighter anything other then continued employment, but it might net them a nice bonus.
Roy Nelson vs. Mike Russow
3 of 10This is not a fight that would be made for aesthetics. When Nelson are Russow get into the cage they look like a fan who decided to try their hand at MMA more then professional martial artists.
Russow and Nelson enjoy food and it shows in their physiques, but their records tell a different tale with both men winning a majority of their fights.
In each outing, both Nelson and Russow have proven that the guts fans see match the ones that give them the courage to step into the Octagon. Getting to see them display that toughness against each other would make the FOX card a memorable event.
Diego Sanchez vs. Josh Neer
4 of 10Diego Sanchez came up short against Jake Ellenberger, but he showed why he was in the main event even in defeat.
Sanchez is an all-action fighter and his only real problem at welterweight is that he has fought everyone there is to fight with few exceptions. Unfortunately for him, those exceptions are already booked for future events.
If Sanchez wants to stay active, he will have to settle for a smaller name in Josh Neer.
Neer is on his second run in the UFC and though it has won him less bonuses then the first, it is proving to be more successful as he won his second fight in a row.
That is a first for Neer who is as capable at knocking opponents out as he is submitting them.
Watching Sanchez charge into that kind of risk would set the fans off and keep viewers watching as well.
Shane Carwin vs. Fabricio Werdum
5 of 10Shane Carwin has been out of action with injuries since his loss in 2011 to now-heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos. While he will be ready to compete by the summer of 2012, he may want to give himself more time to prepare.
He could also use the boost that appearing on network TV would give him considering all the time he lost because of his surgeries. He is imposing and while serious MMA fans know how little that means in a fight, it would attract the casual viewers in droves.
For his part, Fabricio Werdum could build off of his win against Roy Nelson and impress people by submitting a powerful striker like Carwin on FOX. The win wouldn't get him a title shot, but it would make him a contender.
Cung Le vs. Luiz Cane
6 of 10Cung Le is a staple in California having been a Strikeforce fighter. While he may have been built up in San Jose, he still has momentum in the state.
His MMA career has not fared as well with him suffering a knockout loss to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 139. By mid-2012 he will be 40.
Time is running out for Le and he should capitalize with a fight on FOX. It would help his movie career and it could give him the boost he needs to keep getting high-profile fights.
Le is an impressive striker having never lost a bout when he fought as a kickboxer so a match with a non-wrestler makes the most sense. He can't face anyone on an elite level as he hasn't earned it, but he could face a limited slugger like Luiz Cane who has KO'ed 10 of his 12 opponents.
If Cane could knock out Le it would propel him to more main card fights while Le could fend off retirement a little longer.
Donald Cerrone vs. Sam Stout
7 of 10There are very few times that Donald Cerrone steps into the cage where he doesn't put on the performance of the night.
Sam Stout rarely walks into the cage without stealing the show away from the main event.
Both men are coming off losses and could use a rebound win. A win, especially an exciting one on FOX, could get them attention and get fans to forget their recent shortcomings.
The tenacity that both have shown would make sure that sparks fly when they meet in the Octagon.
Ed Herman vs. Court McGee
8 of 10This fight wouldn't reach the top of the card and even if it made it onto the TV portion it wouldn't set the world on fire. Instead it would be a testament to two gritty fighters who refuse to yield.
Ed Herman is a veteran who has seen it all and won bonuses and lost fights. He has fought against title contenders and lower level talent and has made a modest living doing so.
Court McGee is the come-from-nowhere winner of the 11th season of The Ultimate Fighter who has yet to lose a fight in the UFC.
The fight may feature some back and forth brawling, though it has a better chance of being a tactical fight between the two. While that may not be must-see TV it is the essence of MMA.
In some ways that is even better.
Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz
9 of 10Tito Ortiz is another California son, but that isn't the best selling point for this fight.
It isn't even the fact that both of these men are famous.
It comes from the feeling that their time as mixed martial artists is winding down and that every performance they have might be their last.
Griffin and Ortiz were once pay-per-view staples, but because of their recent losses, they have tumbled down the ladder. Put them on free TV and letting the fans get to see the completion of their trilogy and perhaps the last fight of their respective careers.
Frank Mir vs. Cain Velasquez
10 of 10This fight is already getting worked on and there is no better place for it than California on the FOX card.
Not only is Cain Velasquez a native of "the golden state", but he trains out of San Jose. He would easily draw a large crowd if he were the main event at UFC on FOX 4.
He also fought on the first UFC on FOX card and thus has some name recognition with casual fans.
Frank Mir is the perfect opponent as well. He knows how to sell fights, is extremely articulate and always tries to go for the submission or knockout.
Whatever else the card may offer, this is the perfect main event and the biggest potential disappointment if it doesn't happen.
Fans will find out soon enough. Until then, they just have to sit and wait.
