Fantasy Baseball 2008: Top Catchers Preview

Silas Beyman Feb 23, 2008

Just thought I'd start off the first part in the fantasy prediction series with one of the most depleted positions, the catcher.

In-depth analysis and stat predictions ensue in this gripping article.

1. Victor Martinez—CLE

TOP NEWS

Washington Nationals v Los Angeles Angels
New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

Still the top offensive catcher in the game.

He can lead a team to the playoffs, and one of the most underrated aspects of his game is how many games he plays.

He can give you 145 games consistently in a season, and will if his coaches give him a chance.

Another great part of Victor is he doesn't strike out a lot either. In the last three seasons, he hasn't struck out more than 78 times.

Projected stats: .303 AVG, 23 HR, 110 RBI, 85 Runs, .385 OBP

2. Russel Martin—L.A.

In just his third year in the majors Russel Martin only has more upside.

He is a consistent threat for a .300 season with over 20 HRs.

One aspect that is often overlooked is that he can steal bases as well, swiping 21 bags last season.

A great middle round pick-up, and a possible catalyst for any fantasy team.

Projected Stats: .310 AVG, 25 HR, 98 RBI, 20 SBs, 90 Runs, .360 OBP

3. Jorge Posada—NYY

Hip Hip, Jorge!

A great season for Jorge when he was expected to start faltering.

I don't see him decreasing a lot, but don't expect anything better than what he did in '07.

The average will most likely go down, but I think the power numbers will stay the same.

With New York not having a reliable backup, look for Jorge to get a lot of playing time.

Projected Stats: .290 AVG, 22 HR, 100 RBI, 95 Runs, .390 OBP

4. Brian McCann—ATL

Brian McCann really broke out onto the scene in 2007, hitting 18 home runs and driving in 92 runs.

A very underrated player that could be available in late rounds. He is a durable machine that is a good option for many teams.

Projected Stats: .285 AVG, 20 HR, 90 RBI, 90 Runs, .360 OBP

5. Joe Mauer—MIN

What can kindly be put as an off year for Joe, he really declined from an MVP worthy season in 2006.

Not to say a .293 season is bad, but more is to be expected from someone like Mauer.

When healthy and ready to go, Joe Mauer is one of the best at getting on base.

Expect a resurgence to proper form from the former batting champion, as well a healthier season than 2007.

Projected Stats: .310 AVG, 12 HR, 90 RBI, 75 Runs, .400 OBP

One to watch for: Jarrod Saltalamacchia—TEX

A rookie last season, he could put up gaudy numbers in his new home at Texas.

A hitters ballpark that he can take advantage of, Texas might have another big rookie sensation like Pudge on their hands.
