Knicks Rumors: Could Marvin Williams Fit into Knicks System?

According to ESPN's Chris Broussard, Atlanta Hawks forward Marvin Williams wants out of Atlanta and would like to go to a team where he would have an increased offensive role.

Williams since has disputed the claim, but his name is now out there and could be a possibility for the New York Knicks.

One they should pass on.

First there is the obvious: the $23.3 million left on Williams' contract. He's making $7.5 million this season and if the Knicks were interested it would have to be a big deal that would ultimately have to include the likes of a Carmelo Anthony or Amar'e Stoudemire, plus much more from the Hawks.

That's not going to happen anytime soon.

Next is determining whether or not Williams would be a good fit in Mike D'Antoni's offense. He's athletic and fitting in shouldn't be a problem, but producing would be.

Say what you want about Anthony fitting in with Jeremy Lin, but give me Anthony's production any day of the week.

It's too big of a gamble to think a guy like Williams, who hasn't produced consistently at the NBA level would suddenly become a legit scoring option in the Knicks system.

I know certain systems are better for certain players, but there's nothing about Williams' game that suggests he would be a good fit in New York.

This season he's averaging only 9.6 PPG, his lowest total since his rookie season (2005-06). Even his most productive offensive season, 14.8 PPG in 2007-08 wasn't necessarily a really productive campaign.

A team giving Williams a bigger part in the offense doesn't guarantee production.

He's good in transition and has a decent mid-range game, but overall he's passive offensively end and defensively he's not a guy that can routinely handle good athletic wing players.

The part that inquiring teams should be most cautious about is the fact that Williams really hasn't shown much improvement over the course of his now seven-year NBA career. He's too gifted athletically not to have shown major improvements.

While you can do much worse than Williams at the NBA level, given what the New York Knicks have going at the moment, he's a guy that they shouldn't think twice about looking at.

He just wouldn't be a good fit.
