Rajon Rondo Suspended 2 Games for Throwing Ball at Official
The Boston Celtics' frustrating season continued Sunday with a loss to the Detroit Pistons—a game in which star guard Rajon Rondo was ejected for tossing the basketball at referee Sean Wright. The lapse in judgment will reportedly cost the star two more games of activity.
Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports via Twitter that the NBA saw it fit to suspend Rondo after his third-quarter meltdown, which began by not getting a foul called in his favor.
In the midst of an awful showing against the Pistons, Rondo flat-out lost it.
He went to the bucket with a right-handed layup attempt and appeared to draw a great deal of contact from Greg Monroe before landing on the floor.
The scene definitely warranted a foul being called, but the official missed it. What happened next, however, was inexcusable. Flipping a ball at an official out of frustration will draw a suspension every time.
Paul Pierce sounded off after the game about the malaise. Via The Republican:
"Nobody likes to lose, but at the same time nobody likes to lose when you don't feel like you're competing. I mean, if you can go out there and say you gave your best effort and we lose to a better team, then hats off to them. But I think we're a better team than Detroit. They just played harder than us tonight. And we should never come into the locker room being able to say that.
"
The Celtics are in the middle of an aggravating campaign wherein age has finally caught up to their star-studded roster.
Sunday's loss in Detroit was particularly sloppy, and it will now cost the Celtics one of their best players. The C's are now 1-5 in their last six games and will have to face the Dallas Mavericks and the Oklahoma City Thunder without their floor general.
