Casting the Rosters for NBA's 'Fading Veterans' Game

Kelly ScalettaFeb 17, 2012

The NBA has a "Rising Stars Challenge" to feature the young, up and coming players. This features a series of players who will be "drafted" by Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley. The players were established by the NBA.

What if they had a "Fading Veterans Challenge" as well, where the NBA would select some players 33 and older, and they would face off in a game? The game could even be coached by some coaches 70 or older!

So why 33? Well I started with 34 and there were only 19 players who qualified, so I went younger. That is the age where you tend to see a drop off too. There are some on the list that are defying that, but it seemed like a good place to cut things off.

Here are this year's best "Fading Veterans" that would compose the rosters of the teams in question. As with the Rising Stars, the players wouldn't be selected without regard to conference.

The Guards

1 of 3

Let's start off with the guards. These are the best guards in the NBA that are 33 and older:

Kobe Bryant is having the third best scoring season in NBA history for a player least 33 years old.

Steve Nash is the oldest NBA player to ever average double-digit assists, and owns the fourth highest scoring average of any player at least 37.

Ray Allen is averaging 14.3 points and hitting .483 from deep at age 36.

Andre Miller is averaging 10 points per game and 6.5 assists coming off the bench at the age of 35.

Vince Carter is averaging 11.6 points and is shooting .461 from three at the age of 35.

Jason Terry is averaging 14.8 points and 3.6 assists per game at the age of 34.

The Forwards

2 of 3

Here are the best forwards 33 and older:

Tim Duncan has a player efficiency rating of 21.7. He's averaging 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in just 27.3 minutes per game, even though he's 35.

Kevin Garnett is averaging 14.1 points and 7.8 rebounds a game, while still being one of the toughest and meanest defenders in the game at 35.

Dirk Nowitzki had to go visit the fountain of youth at the age of 33, but since he got back, he's balling. He's raised his scoring to 18.2 points per game and is grabbing 6.1 boards per game as well.

Paul Pierce carried the Boston Celtics while Rajon Rondo was injured. He's averaging 17.3 points, 5.1 boards and 5.4 assists per game.

Antawn Jamison is 35 and playing in obscurity, but he's still averaging 16.7 points and 6.7 boards a game.

Shaw Marion is a vastly unappreciated defensive player and he's averaging 12.2 points and 6.4 boards as well.

Centers

3 of 3

The best centers over 33 are few and far between. Just like the rest of the NBA All-Star events, it's easier to get in as a center. Here they are.

Marcus Camby is playing his usual stellar defense. He's only scoring 3.3 points per game, but is grabbing 9.6 boards in just 24.3 minutes. Not bad for a 37-year-old.

Jermaine O'Neal, at 33, is averaging 5.3 boards and 5.1 points per game while anchoring the middle of the Boston Celtics defense.
