Why New England Patriots Would Be Unstoppable with Addition of Reggie Wayne

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

The New England Patriots did not come away victorious in Super Bowl XLVI, but they are well positioned to make a run at a title next season. The Pats return a solid nucleus, but are missing one key component: a true No. 2 receiver. Indianapolis Colts wideout Reggie Wayne could fill that role perfectly.

Wayne is an unrestricted free agent after 11 ridiculously productive seasons in Indianapolis, and at 33 years old, he would almost certainly be willing to head to New England to be guaranteed a chance to compete for another Super Bowl title.

While he's not exactly young, I think the Miami product could be a great No. 2 option across from Wes Welker. Entering this season, Wayne had seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, and after this season he has caught at least 75 passes in eight straight years.

Even without Peyton Manning under center this season, the five-time Pro Bowler caught 75 passes for 960 yards and four touchdowns. If he did that with a combination of Kerry Collins, Dan Orlovsky and Curtis Painter throwing him passes, imagine what he could do in an offense with Tom Brady at quarterback.

This year, the Patriots got by with Deion Branch as their No. 2 wideout. While he was serviceable, New England could certainly do better. With a guy like Wayne added to an arsenal of weapons that includes Welker and tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, I really don't see how a defense could stop the Pats.

If New England were to add Wayne and possibly pick up another running back to add to the team's stable, it could then turn all its attention to patching up a leaky defense. With a guy like Wayne in the folk, the Patriots would be unstoppable on offense.
