Dwight Howard: Why Superman Should Force Orlando Magic's Hand

Matt ShetlerFeb 9, 2012

The Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard haven't exactly seen eye to eye about the superstars future.

Howard has made no secret about letting everyone know that he wants out of Disneyland. However, the Magic haven't obliged.

There's the fact that the All-Star Game is coming to Orlando in just a little over three weeks. The organization doesn't want to have to deal with the embarrassment of seeing Howard come back to play in the game as a member of another organization.

There's also the issue of Howard's short list of teams he would like to be dealt to and the lack of valuable trade assets they have to get a deal done.

For Orlando, it seems more likely by the day that they hold onto Howard for the season and either attempt to re-sign him in the offseason or work on a sign-and-trade then.

That wouldn't make Howard happy, as he would be leaving $30 million on the table if the Magic don't deal him this season.

So for Howard, if he's really serious about being dealt, there's really only one option left on the table and that's to force Orlando's hand.

Howard's smiling personality and spotless reputation have already taken a hit throughout this whole saga, but if Howard really wants to get what he's seeking then it's time for him to become the full-fledged villain.

If New Jersey is where he really wants to be then Howard needs to make it known that the Nets are the only team he will accept a deal to, similar to the strategy Carmelo Anthony used to get to New York last year.

Forcing Orlando's hand is really the only way Howard is going to be happy with the outcome of this saga in the end.

If he has to go on a mini-strike to get his way then so be it. He's already the bad guy in all this, so why not go all the way with it?

He's not committed to anything the Magic have going on this year and he's shown that, so why not go all the way with his demands until Orlando has absolutely no choice but to trade him?

That's the only way he's going to get his way and his money.

Otherwise, at the end of the day, Howard could end up being very disappointed.
