2012 NFL Free Agent Predictions: Projecting Where Top Free-Agent WRs Will Land

John RozumFeb 8, 2012

With the Super Bowl now over, we can begin to focus more attention on the free-agency period and the 2012 NFL Draft.

That being said, there's plenty of well-established talent at the pro level to analyze, especially wide receivers.

In a pass-happy league, here are three receivers who should sign elsewhere this offseason.

Reggie Wayne, San Francisco 49ers

Although he's 33 years old right now, Reggie Wayne still has the solid vertical threat to bring to an offense. Even without Peyton Manning in 2011, Wayne still recorded 960 receiving yards on 75 receptions and didn't miss a game.

A team such as the San Francisco 49ers would him suit well as they need to improve their pass offense and will have some more veteran leadership.

He'll get to play for a developing quarterback, great head coach and have a sick defense and rushing offense backing him up. In addition, Wayne could be of influence to younger receivers such as Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan.

Include tight end Vernon Davis and the 49ers' passing offense just became legitimately complete.

DeSean Jackson, Carolina Panthers

He's young with great explosiveness and can significantly change the field position on special teams. DeSean Jackson is ideal for the Carolina Panthers because they finished ranked No. 30, averaging 5.5 yards per punt return.

Offensively, Jackson makes for a solid receiving threat from the slot with Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell out wide, not to mention tight end Greg Olsen and quarterback Cam Newton as well.

Adding Jackson would only make the Panthers more dangerous in a high-score driven NFC South. With so much talent around him, Jackson would thrive as a third target playing against those defenses. Plus, his versatility would provide a horizontal rushing dimension.

If this happens, watch out, because Carolina will be rolling all through 2012.

Robert Meachem, Miami Dolphins

It would be a big hurt to the New Orleans Saints if they and receiver Robert Meachem decide to part ways. Fortunately for the Saints, quarterback Drew Brees can make anyone around him better. With that said, the Miami Dolphins would fit Meachem well.

Whether he's the No. 2 target opposite Brandon Marshall or the slot man next to Brian Hartline, Meachem gives quarterback Matt Moore a fourth reliable target. With tight end Anthony Fasano also a threat, Meachem won't see a lot of double coverage and he'll shred in the AFC East.

And, regardless of whether Miami sticks with Moore or puts someone else under center, the Dolphins have exploded everywhere since Reggie Bush and the ground game finished 2011 on a strong note.

Meachem can beat any single coverage situation and is even better at moving the chain (29 of 40 catches in 2011 were for first downs). In turn, having Meachem move to the Miami Dolphins makes them become AFC East title contenders immediately.
