Peyton Manning to Redskins: Joe Theismann Right to Call Potential Move Horrific
Peyton Manning is very likely to join a new team for 2012, but should the Washington Redskins bring him in, it will be a disastrous idea because they're better off putting their focus toward a younger quarterback.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported over the weekend that if Manning is released by the Indianapolis Colts, the Redskins plan to pursue him. This did not sit well with former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, and he's actually right on the points he made.
According to the Washington Post, Theismann was recently on 106.7 The Fan’s Mike Wise and Holden Kushner show, and he voiced his opinion on the Redskins acquiring Manning.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
"It’s not a good idea, it’s not a bad idea — It’s a horrific idea. It would be one of the poorest things that we could do as a franchise. Are we gonna go find another guy for just a couple of years again?
Haven’t we done this before? Haven’t we seen this act before? And by the way, if you get Peyton Manning, don’t you have a concern about protecting him? Don’t you have a concern about who he throws the football to?
"
Theismann continued on a long rant, ending it by saying he thinks the Redskins will find a younger guy to be the franchise quarterback for many years.
He's correct in calling it horrific, simply because the Redskins need to think about the bigger picture. Sure, winning now would be great, but Manning will only be around for a short time, and that will lead to another setback in the future.
Plus, there's no guarantee Manning will be the same, and that is a risk the Redskins don't need to take.
Washington isn't going very far with John Beck or Rex Grossman attempting to lead the team. While Manning is no doubt one of the best quarterbacks in the league, there is too much unknown about him and his health, which is why the Redskins should stay away from him.
Of course he's a phenomenal player, but the Redskins need to focus on the future. Getting a younger, healthier quarterback is their best bet.
If the Redskins are smart, they will do whatever it takes to end up with Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL draft. The Heisman Trophy winner is a dangerous threat on every play, and he would definitely learn a great deal under Mike Shanahan.
In order to win in the NFC East, Washington needs a legitimate quarterback. Right now, it's uncertain if Manning is that. Even if he believes he's 100 percent ready to play by next season, he hasn't played in over a year, so he's going to be rusty.
The Redskins are better off drafting Griffin because they'll have a stellar quarterback for many years to come. At most, Washington would get a couple years from Manning, and once he's done, it will only cause more struggles for the Redskins.
Theismann is wise to think the Redskins don't need Manning, because it's the truth.
Griffin is a dual-threat quarterback that thinks to pass first, which makes him scary good. He has the potential to do great things in Washington, but the Redskins will significantly hurt the future of their franchise by choosing Manning over him.
Looking for a quick fix is not the right approach; it will only make things worse in Washington.
