NBA Rumors: J.R. Smith Is Not a Solution for New York Knicks' Issues
The New York Knicks have a lot of problems, but adding a shooting guard who shoots too much and doesn’t play defense isn’t going to solve any of them.
There are whispers around the league that the former Nuggets’ 2-guard is considering suiting up for the Big Apple-based team when his contract with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls in China is up.
According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, coach Mike D’Antoni plans to aggressively pursue the free agent when he is cleared to rejoin the NBA by FIBA.
New York can offer him a maximum of $2.5 million for the season via their “room exception,” but he may be looking to make more elsewhere by a team with some cap room.
Knicks fans had better hope someone else pays him because he honestly does nothing for them or their fast-fading championship hopes.
Smith is simply not the solution for a team that’s biggest problem is only having one basketball to share between two players that absolutely need it in their hand to dominate the game.
Ball movement has been a big problem and sorry to say, but Jeremy Lin isn’t going to step up like he did against the Nets every night.
Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony are both black holes once they receive the ball, often opting to try and create their own shot rather than continue passing.
Smith is another one of these types, as the relentless gunner averages over 10 shots per game for his career and occasionally shoots over six threes per contest as well.
His career assist average of 2.0 per game is absolutely awful for a shooting guard and the Knicks do not need a player who chucks the ball up without a conscience and cannot dish the rock.
New York would just be throwing money away on another terrible 2-guard if they were to land J.R. Smith.
