UFC 143 Results: Why Carlos Condit Did Nothing Wrong Against Nick Diaz

Matt SaccaroFeb 5, 2012

There is a hate-filled uproar in the MMA world over Carlos Condit's decision victory over Nick Diaz, but it's much ado about nothing—Condit didn't do anything wrong.

In fact, Condit only excelled.

Going into the fight, Diaz was seen as some sort of unstoppable force. His boxing was second to none, his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was dangerous and his conditioning would take any fighter into the deep waters and subsequently drown them.

However, as each minute of the 25-minute affair for the UFC interim welterweight championship went by, layers upon layers of these notions about Diaz's superiority were stripped away.

Diaz was losing the fight.

Condit employed a brilliant game plan in which he outworked Diaz with movement (not "running"), counter-striking, and an array of kicks that stymied the Stockton brawler and never let him fire off his patented "Stockton Slap" style.

To put it more simply, Condit didn't just stand in front of Diaz and let himself get hit like angry fans after the event apparently wanted him to.

Instead, Condit tailor made his attacks to exploit the holes in Diaz's game. It might not have been an "epic" slugfest, but it was an entertaining fight and Condit did the right thing.

He didn't run away, scared. He used footwork, movement, and didn't let Diaz tee-off on him whilst he was against the cage (and why should he, just because some people are bloodthirsty?).

If you want to see a "real fight" go to a bar or a strip club parking lot or some other sordid venue. If you want to see the greatest athletes in the world truly testing themselves in the purest sport in the world, watch the UFC and don't complain when the "wrong" guy wins.

Condit battered Diaz and Diaz didn't batter Condit. That's called winning, and there's nothing wrong with that no matter how many Diaz fans say so.
