Texas Football Recruiting 2012: The Good and Bad from National Signing Day
Texas head coach Mack Brown may be experiencing some heat due to two below par seasons, but if there's one thing about Brown, it's that he recruits well. This year's Longhorns class is, as usual, one of the top classes in the country.
With national signing day over and done with, the recruiting process has a lot more pieces in place and the picture is becoming a lot clearer. There are still a few top prospects out there that remain uncommitted, but for the most part things will begin to slow down in the recruiting world.
As we now have a better feel for the recruiting classes and the signings are official, let's look over the good and bad of the Texas Longhorns' recruiting class.
Good: Torshiro Davis Commit
1 of 3The Texas Longhorns have always been known for their defense and could always use another great linebacker. That's why the commitment of Torshiro Davis is so huge for the Longhorns as he has a big frame at 6'3", 220 pounds and is a great pass-rusher.
Davis was actually committed to the LSU Tigers for a while, before changing his mind at the very last minute. Hailing from the Louisiana area, he will be helping this team sack the quarterback for the next few years.
Bad: Losing Thomas Johnson
2 of 3When your team was ranked 86th in the country in passing yards last season, it'd be nice to pick up a few talented wide receivers. Thomas Johnson is one of the better wide receivers in this class and has superb route-running skills and picks up chunks of yards after the catch.
After committing to the Longhorns about a year ago, he decided that he would be much happier if he committed to the rival Texas A&M instead. I'm sure this makes Longhorn fans extremely happy being able to help the Aggies out as they head into the SEC.
Good: Top Players at Nearly Every Position
3 of 3Overall this recruiting class is top-notch. It's going to be extremely hard to find one that's really that much better than the one Mack Brown and company put together. Anytime you have elite players at almost every position, you did a fantastic job.
Defensive tackle Malcolm Brown and running back Johnathan Gray may receive most of the attention, but there are great players beyond just those two. Like wide receiver Cayleb Jones, who is about as sure-handed as anyone in this year's class. Offensive lineman Curtis Riser and Kennedy Estelle have the potential to step in and contribute early on. The list goes on and on as majority of these players are either 4- or 5-star players.
Mack Brown did it again. Now it's time to see him turn this program around and get back in the BCS bowl conversation.
