Who Will Have the Bigger Instant Impact for FSU, Eddie Goldman or Mario Edwards?
Florida State has had a good reason to celebrate on national signing day by grabbing a number of highly rated recruits, but which one will have the biggest instant impact?
Among the many commitments that took place, the Seminoles were able to sign Mario Edwards and Eddie Goldman, the No. 3 and No. 7 overall players in the nation according to Rivals.com.
Each player has plenty to offer the team, but before dominating the competition together they will be competing for playing time as freshmen.
While Edwards has been listed as both a defensive end and defensive tackle, Goldman plays exclusively on the inside and is much more ready for this position at the college level.
Goldman has all of the physical tools you look for in a defensive tackle. He currently stands at 315 lbs. before entering a collegiate strength program, and can be an anchor for the entire defense.
His ability to take on blockers helps everyone else on the team to make plays, but the athleticism of the Washington D.C. product allows him to cause his own disruptions in the backfield.
Conversely, Edwards is much better suited for defensive end. He is smaller, but still has great size for the position.
The difference between the two players is the speed that Edwards provides. The Texas native has advanced technique for his age that allow him to get past blockers and move towards the ball-carrier.
Edwards is also known for have a great motor. He does not take any plays off and it leads to him being a terror on opposing offenses.
During the course of their careers, these defensive linemen will make an outstanding team for the Seminoles. This duo, in addition to cornerback Ronald Darby and quarterback Jameis Winston, will allow Florida State to compete for a national title in a few seasons.
However, fans will be able to see much more of an impact from Edwards next season than his new teammate.
His versatility allows him to fill multiple positions which should increase playing as a freshman. Goldman will probably also need more coaching, while Edwards could step in right away and be successful.
The good news for Florida State fans is that their team is loaded for the future either way.
