Analysis of the Cleveland Cavaliers after the Ben Wallace Acquisition

David JensenFeb 21, 2008

This trade isn't even official yet, but I believe it's rock solid, so I will go ahead and chime in.

The big question is... Are the Cavaliers better off after this trade?

They are, mostly due to the acquisition of Delonte West.

The Cav's needed a player like West who provides a complete game; defense, toughness, rebounding, shot blocking, and versatility.

West doesn't need to be a traditional point guard because King James usually is initiating the offense anyway, not unlike Kobe in Los Angeles. If you are a fantasy owner, Delonte West is the player to target as the beneficiary of this swap.

Wally's World (Wally Szczerbiak) is a stand & shoot three point specialist who now gives the Cav's another three point specialist with the other being Daniel Gibson. Yet, they are both solid role players who really shouldn't be starting.

I would rather have Boobie starting with West in the back court. Joe Smith, Varajao, Wallace & Ilgauskas are a solid front line.

As for the others involved in the deal, Hughes just isn't a player you want on your team, his track record speaks for itself. Wallace should be better than he was with the Bulls, but not as good as he was with the Pistons. Joe Smith is Joe Smith, solid.

The Cav's had to make a move and they did. They have more offensive options now, more NBA experience, and more gamers.

Can they contend with the Celtics, not quite yet. They still need a third star.
I would say the power rankings in the east would have them fourth, behind Boston, Detroit and Toronto.

Are the Bulls better? I don't think so.

Smith is better than Gooden, and Hughes is just a scorer. What are the Bulls going to do, limit Thabo, Gordon & Deng's minutes?

For some reason I don't believe Gooden and Hughes are that great of character guys. I just don't see the benefit for the Bulls.

Cav's move a step forward and the Bulls continue to make no sense.
