Tennessee Titans: Is Peyton Manning Really a Good Fit?

Chad MintonJan 31, 2012

It should have been expected that sooner or later Tennessee Titans fans would begin pushing for Peyton Manning to join the Tennessee Titans.

After all, Manning did capture the hearts of thousands of Tennessee fans when he wore the orange and white of the University of Tennessee.

With things starting to turn sour between the Indianapolis Colts and Manning, Titans fans have created a website that is urging the Titans organization to bring Manning back home to Tennessee.

The question is whether or not Manning is really the right fit for a team that has two viable quarterbacks, one being a first-round draft pick from the 2011 NFL draft in Jake Locker.

In all reality, Manning is not the right fit for the Titans. In fact, Manning couldn't be more wrong for the Titans and their current situation at quarterback.

The Titans are about two seasons too late in wanting to land a guy like Manning. Native Tennesseans need to check their emotions at the door and realize Manning makes no sense for the Titans. It wasn't the quarterback play that kept the Titans from making the playoffs in 2011. A host of other things contributed to the Titans failing to get a playoff berth.

Matt Hasselbeck did exactly what he was brought to Tennessee to do, which was make the Titans competitive and give them a respectable passing game. He more than fulfilled his obligations and was a huge factor in making the Titans' passing offense 12th overall in the NFL, as opposed to 25th in 2010.

To add onto that, Hasselbeck finished with the third-highest passing yardage total in his 13-year career last season.

He did all of this mainly without his best receiver in Kenny Britt, and also without Chris Johnson playing anywhere near what he was expected to do.

Why would you want to bring in a guy that is running on fumes in his NFL career to replace a guy that just improved your offense that much?

That's not even including the fact that Locker is the future of the franchise and was drafted to take over this team as soon as he's ready to do so. Locker proved he's very much capable of taking over this team as soon as the coaching staff sees fit.

The Titans needs to be focusing on other areas, mainly on defense, right now and not on quarterback.

As attractive as bringing Manning back to Tennessee might seem, fans need to realize that what Manning did over a decade ago is not what he can do for an NFL franchise now. It's still not even clear if Manning is medically able to play another NFL game. While he may have the competitive edge, is that enough for a team to take a chance on?

There are just way too many questions surrounding this whole scenario, and the Titans aren't anywhere close to being desperate at the quarterback position.

Manning may have a couple years of good football left, but it won't come in a Titans uniform. The front office is smarter than that, and that's why it will continue to build for the future with Locker under center.
