Stefon Diggs Wisely Bypasses National Signing Day Hype
National signing day is good for just one thing: making sure immense hype is wasted on the young.
It's unfair to place such pressure on unproven athletes, and that is why it's wise for Stefon Diggs to decide his future on his own time.
According to MaxPreps, the highly coveted wide receiver from the aptly named Our Lady of Good Counsel is going to delay his decision, perhaps until February 10th.
Rivals has Stefon Diggs as the eighth-best player nationally and the No. 2 player at his position. There is no question that Diggs has the talents to really go far at the next level.
He is a lightning-fast runner that reminds Rivals of DeSean Jackson. That kind of high praise makes us hopeful of this young man's attributes.
It seems he also has top-shelf wisdom to go along with all that talent. Diggs will set off on his fifth and final visit this weekend when he goes to visit the University of Maryland.
The Terrapins may have the hometown advantage, but they will join a long list of programs that have a puncher's chance in securing the top recruit: California, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State.
You only need to see the words of Good Counsel coach Bob Milloy, who spoke with MaxPreps on Tuesday, to see how Diggs is feeling:
"His head is spinning. I don't think he has any idea where he wants to go. All I ask him is, "How was your weekend?" And he replies, "How could it not be good with the entire campus falling all over you?"
"
And then it comes full circle. We are taken away from this immense sports holiday of sorts called national signing day.
In reality, it is unfair to speculate and hype up kids that still haven't learned to live on their own, let alone decide what school they will claim.
We are a sports-mad nation, and the hype balloon continues to get bigger, now engulfing the outer reaches of high school sports.
So I say kudos to Diggs for taking his time and not rushing into a decision that will shape his life. It has to be a wild experience to visit a school and receive more adoration than you could ever dream.
The hard part is cutting away the fat and deciding where home truly is. Diggs will decide that on his time and his own way, and that makes him wise beyond his years.
