Florida Recruiting 2012: 7 Things the Gators Are Hoping for on NSD
Will Muschamp is enjoying his first full season of recruiting. After taking over last January and playing mostly damage control, the head coach has enjoyed having an entire year to build relationships and recruit some of the best talent in America.
The Gators have put together a solid class so far, and with National Signing Day only a few days away, are looking to finish the class out strong.
While the Gators have had much success so far hauling in one 5-star recruit and 13 4-star recruits, there are still a lot of players on the Gators' wish list.
As fickle as the mind of a high school student can be, nothing is set in stone and almost any recruit can change his mind until his letter of intent goes through the fax machine.
Here are seven players coach Muschamp would love to see come through his fax machine come National Signing Day.
Josh Harvey-Clemons
1 of 6Josh Harvey-Clemons is the top-rated prospect from Georgia and the second best at his position in the nation. Harvey-Clemons was said to be down to just Florida and Georgia until he took his final official visit to Florida State.
Florida State is rumored to be back in the mix now, but Harvey-Clemons wants to play right away and his best opportunity to do that will be at Florida or Georgia.
Harvey-Clemons has the body type and physical play that makes him a perfect candidate to play the "Sam" linebacker position; both Florida and Georgia have a need for depth at that position. At Florida Harvey-Clemons would step right in during summer practice and challenge Lerentee McCray for the starting position.
This is a player that the Gators would love to have, and to take him away from Georgia would be the cherry on top.
Avery Young
2 of 6Avery Young is the ninth-rated offensive tackle in the nation according to Rivals.
The Gators have recruited Young hard over the past year, but are struggling to close the deal on the lineman. Both Georgia and Miami are making strong cases for the tackle.
Young was a dominant force on the offensive line in high school and is ready to step in Day 1 and compete for a starting job at whichever school he chooses to attend.
The Gators suffered this season after switching from a spread option to a pro style offense. In the past Florida had sacrificed size for speed and agility in their linemen and never got the kind of pass protection or run blocking they needed last season.
The Gators already signed D.J Humphries and Jessamen Dunker to compete for starting positions on the offensive line and added another tackle in Dante Phillips. Young would be able to come in and compete at either tackle position from Day 1 for the Gators.
He may not end up with Florida on National Signing Day, but Will Muschamp and the Gators sure hope Young chooses Florida.
Nelson Agholor
3 of 6Nelson Agholor has been on the Gators' radar for a long time. The coaching staff has made him a priority in this recruiting class and really needs the athlete to fill out the receiver depth chart.
Agholor is a playmaker that can make an impact from all over the field. He is raw as a route runner but his athleticism more than makes up for it. Agholor can return punts and kicks along with handling the ball out of the backfield.
Agholor is still considering Florida, Florida State, USC, Oklahoma and Notre Dame. His last official visit was to USC and Lane Kiffin made an in-home visit last week.
It was long thought that Agholor would stay in state, but as the process has gone on, USC and Notre Dame have both made up ground on the Gators.
Florida only have one receiver on the roster that has been anything close to reliable in Andre Debose (and he has only shown up in flashes), along with redshirt freshman JuJuan Story. The possibility of playing early and close to home could sway the receiver's decision and the Gators hope to haul in this game changer come National Signing Day.
Darius Hamilton
4 of 6Darius Hamilton was thought to be a lock to Rutgers until the departure of coach Greg Schiano.
Hamilton had expressed some desire in staying close to home for college, but with the departure of Schiano, the Gators have stepped back into the fold. According to a source, Hamilton will make his announcement on Tuesday night, the night before National Signing Day, and he is likely to choose the Gators.
Florida was forced to play Sharrif Floyd at DE last season due to depth chart concerns. Floyd, a natural DT, struggled at his new position but showed his potential at tackle in the bowl game. Adding a player of Hamilton's stature, along with the other DE commits Florida has already secured, would allow Floyd to move back to tackle.
As with many recruits, the opportunity to play early could be too good for Hamilton to pass up.
Tracy Howard
5 of 6Tracy Howard is one of the top uncommitted recruits in the nation.
Howard has been heavily recruited by most of the top programs in the country but has narrowed his list down to Florida, Miami and Florida State.
Howard has the potential to start as a freshman and make an impact wherever he decides to play his college ball. He is a true cover corner who can play the type of physical game that Muschamp and Dan Quinn ask of their cornerbacks.
Howard's mother has been a Gator fan for a long time and if momma gets her say, Tracy will end up a Gator.
Stefon Diggs
6 of 6Now I know it is not fair to thrust this label onto a high school player, and the last one who was given such a compliment (Andre Debose) has not panned out this way, but Stefon Diggs reminds me a lot of Percy Harvin.
Diggs is a home run threat whenever the ball is in his hands. He played a lot of tailback in high school but projects as a WR in college. Diggs is raw in his route running, but much like Nelson Agholor, his speed and natural ability makes up for it.
Diggs wavered a little bit when Charlie Weis left for Kansas, but I expect him to end up in Gainesville. Playing early is important to Diggs and he will get that opportunity at Florida.
Diggs does not have an official top 5 schools and will not make his decision on National Signing Day, rather waiting until Feb. 10 to make his college decision.
