National Signing Day 2012: Gunnier Kiel and More 5-Star Studs Who Will Bust
Every college team has high hopes for its recruits, but the sad reality is that for every 5-star prospect that lives up to his potential, there are several that end up being complete busts.
It's tough to project how a kid will perform in college because so many factors come into play. A recruit's success is dependent on how he adapts to his new home, new teammates and new coaching staff.
I sure as hell can't predict the future, but I can see the signs in front of me, and right now things aren't looking good for the following three prospects.
Gunner Kiel, QB, Notre Dame
Kiel, the No. 20 prospect in the class of 2012, was spectacular in his senior season, throwing for 2,523 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Unfortunately, his college career has already gotten off to a rocky start.
Kiel made headlines for his flip-flopping tendencies, changing his commitment from Indiana to LSU to Notre Dame over the course of the 2011 season. Spurning multiple fanbases isn't the best way to start your career, and his selection of the Fighting Irish is a bit odd.
Instead of joining the perennial powerhouse LSU, Kiel joins a program with several recent disappointments at quarterback (Jimmy Clausen, Dayne Crist).
If he's not careful, Kiel might become the latest high-profile quarterback to flop at the next level.
D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida
Humphries is the No. 2 prospect in this class, and has drawn comparisons to NFL stud D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
However, he will be a major bust if he doesn't add some much-needed bulk. Humphries is 6'5" but weighs in at just 265 pounds. He'll need to get closer to the 300 range if he's ever going to be a force on the offensive line.
Humphries is an elite athlete, and there's certainly a place for him somewhere on the field. With his speed and mobility, he may be better suited as a D-lineman.
Josh Harvey-Clemons, ATH, Undeclared
Harvey-Clemons is a freak athlete, but without a true position I'm not sure how he'll fare on the collegiate level.
The 6'4", 210-pound prospect has played wide receiver, outside linebacker and safety. He can be disruptive in the passing game thanks to his height and length, but he needs to add some muscle to his wiry frame.
Whichever team gets him will have an incredible athlete. However, he'll never develop into a difference-maker if it doesn't cater to his talents.
